History of Tax – Paying for the Renaissance (online event)

On Zoom

Have you ever wondered how the Renaissance was paid for? Florence was one of Italy’s richest city-states but also one whose rulers were acutely conscious of both the shortfalls of the tax base on which it rested and the problems the tax system was causing (such as depopulation). The talk will cover what was taxed and how as well as other features of Florentine finance that tackled tax evasion. The speaker Andrew Loader is a former history scholar of Christ’s College, Cambridge and Past Consort of the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers. This event will be on zoom, is free to attend and no prior booking is necessary.

Shrieval Election and Lunch at Guildhall

Guildhall Gresham Street, London, United Kingdom

Twice a year, the City of London Corporation’s Common Hall is transformed from a standard local authority meeting on civic issues, into a day of great ceremony. Each autumn Liverymen elect the next year’s Lord Mayor and every summer, it’s the turn of the two Sheriffs. The Shrieval election ceremony starts at noon (There is no admission after 11.45am.) and ends around 12.30-12.45pm. Dress is lounge suit for men and smart day wear for ladies. After Common Hall, most Liveries go home, but our Master always hosts a private Reception and Lunch. We go up to Guildhall’s roof terrace on the fourth floor for the Reception and then into the Aldermen’s Dining Room for lunch. The day is very much one for partners and guests too. This year, as an extra, it has been possible to secure some places at the annual Armed Forces Flag Raising in Guildhall Yard. For those who would like to stay on to see it, this takes place at 3.15pm, lasts about 30 minutes, and is rather a nice sign of respect for our military from the City. Common Hall and the Flag Raising are free, and this year the Lunch costs £75. The Dining Room only holds 28 guests, so places will have to be allocated on as first-come-first-served basis.

Grange Festival Visit to see Verdi’s Macbeth

Grange Festival The Grange, Northington, Alresford, Hampshire, United Kingdom

The Grange Festival is one of those extraordinary events that is really hard to describe. You have to see it to believe it – especially as it is about so much more than the performances themselves. Sparkling wine from The Grange vineyard; delicious, sesonal and unpretentious food, made from beautiful locally sourced ingredients and venue like no other in opera. As you sink into one of the comfortable seats in our elegant indoor theatre, expect to be wowed by performances curated by artistic director Michael Chance CBE, who is dedicated to bringing the very best opera and dance to this unusual setting near Winchester. Verdi wrote Macbeth in 1847 for the Teatro della Pergola in Florence. The theatre at The Grange is of similar proportions. For Verdi, Shakespeare’s Macbeth was ‘one of mankind’s greatest creations’. His version of the play is full of threat and ferocity, an intense exploration of ruthless ambition in a world governed by superstition and violence. Lady Macbeth dominates and the chorus, who are both observers and protagonists, is given some of Verdi’s most thrilling choral writing. We are delighted to have been offered an exclusive package for up to 20 people, for £230 each. This includes a top-price ticket to the performance; a three-course Dinner in the House made with delicious locally sourced ingredients and an invitation to the Artistic Director’s post-performance drinks reception with Michael Chance.

St Paul’s Cathedral Orchestral Mass followed by Lunch

St Pauls Cathedral

Since 1973, Orchestral Masses had been a well-established annual feature of choral worship at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Masses stopped during the lockdown and the lack of tourist income meant the Cathedral was not in a position to reintroduce them. The Charity Trustees agreed last year to make a donation to St Paul’s to enable the first Orchestral Mass since the pandemic to be held. As a result an Orchestral Mass by Mozart will be held under the Dome of St Paul’s as part of the Sunday morning Eucharist on Sunday 10th July at 11:15am. Members and their guests are invited to attend the mass. There is no charge although contributions to St Paul’s would be welcome. After the Mass the team at St Paul’s have invited representatives from the Company to join them for pre-lunchtime drinks in the Chapter House, so that they may express their gratitude for the Charity’s support. You are welcome to join us for lunch at Cote afterwards - places for lunch are limited to 20.

St Paul’s Orchestral Mass

St Paul's Cathedral St Paul's Churchyard, London, United Kingdom

Following the continued support of the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity, WCCAEW members and guests are invited to attend a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass on Sunday 9 July at 11.15am, followed by drinks in the Chapter House. The St Paul's Cathedral Choir and the City of London Sinfonia will perform Haydn's Missa in angustiis at this Sung Eucharist.  This work which translates as 'Mass for troubled times,' is one of the six masses written near the end of Joseph Haydn's life.  Also known as the 'Nelson Mass' it was first performed in 1798. Based on a German tradition, where every movement of a mass is performed with an orchestra, this Orchestral Mass has become a well-established and popular highlight at St Paul’s Cathedral – proving a significant draw for worshippers and visitors alike. The Covid pandemic had a hugely negative impact on St Paul’s Cathedral’s finances. Historically the Cathedral has been heavily reliant on visitor (especially tourist) income to provide 80% of the running costs. They have had to make significant financial savings since 2020 to sustain their operations, including reducing their workforce by 25%, and cutting back on some of their operations including reducing the activity of their famous Choir. St Paul's Cathedral's traditional Orchestral Mass series of four performances is entirely subject to the Cathedral receiving funding. There were no such Masses in 2020 or 2021 and just one in 2022 which was only made possible thanks to the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity grant and our Music Patrons support. What can I expect? Sung Eucharists is the high point of our weekly worship, engaging the senses with sound, colour and movement. This service includes choral and orchestral music, hymn singing and a sermon, During the service, the congregation will be invited to share in the bread and wine....

Summer Lunch

Watermen's Hall St-Mary-at-Hill, London, United Kingdom

Following the success of last year's Summer Lunch in the lovely Barber Surgeons' Hall, another lunch is planned for Friday 11 August at Watermen's Hall. Attendees will enjoy a relaxed drinks reception and then lunch in the company of the Immediate Past Lord Mayor, the always-charming Vincent Keaveny, who should have been the Company's guest at the Charter Anniversary Banquet last year. This event is extremely guest- and partner-friendly so do book up and bring a party.
