Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch

This annual City institution has grown over the years until it is now quite the largest and swankiest Curry Lunch one is every likely to attend, and very much a sight to be seen. Tickets cost £100 and for that we get a drinks reception in the Old Library at Guildhall and then move through into the Great Hall, where teams of chefs man a series of serveries, with a mouth-watering series of curries laid out on them, along with the usual accompaniments. We always take a party, so book your place(s) here and then we can all coordinate over timings, as the event itself runs from Noon to 3pm, with various time slots on offer.

Little Yang Sing Lunch in Manchester

You may recall that two years ago Master Lindsay was going to celebrate her northern roots with a lunch at the Yang Sing restaurant in Manchester. The pandemic intervened and the event was postponed. We now have a new date and Hilary and current Master Estlin will be delighted if you can join them both on Friday 22nd April at the Little Yang Sing Restaurant (the Yang Sing is being refurbished), in Manchester's celebrated Chinatown. ‘The restaurant offers the best traditional Cantonese cuisine in the North West’ says one of the many glowing reviews. Members often say that it is both pleasingly short and very interesting, and it is our opportunity to make our views plain, and set the course of the Company for the immediate future. The Master, Clerk, Treasurer, Almoner and Committee Chairmen all report and submit themselves to questions. Spring Dinner for Members and Potential Members

Glaziers’ Hall is unique – not because it actually stands outside the City boundaries, as Gunmakers, Distillers and Architects do so too – but because it is the only one shared by three Companies. Quite how the Glaziers, Launderers and Scientific Instrument Makers got together, much less co-operated on something as potentially contentious as the purchase and maintenance of a Hall, remains a subject of debate. However, it really is an amazing building, with some spectacular rooms looking north across the river towards the Square Mile, and the stunning engineering of London Bridge on its right flank. The Master is holding our Common Hall at Glaziers’ Hall from 6pm to 6.45pm, and then we are moving on to a drinks reception (very necessary after the stress of our AGM!) in the stunning River Room, before enjoying a buffet supper, complete with a performance by the well-known London band: Lady and the Dukes. This will be a fun event and by tradition is confined to Members and guests who are themselves prospective Members. Places cost just £54, so come and enjoy an evening of good food and drink, plus some fine music, with your fellow Members and other CAs whom you think might be interested in joining our ranks.

City Walk and Drink

Please join us for a fascinating walk and a little competition! Start: Business Centre  Chartered Accountants Hall at 5.30pm on Tuesday 3rd May Bring a small team (3-5) or we will put you in teams. There will be a prize for the winning team! The walk is approximately two miles and is suitable for people in wheelchairs. It will finish with drinks and canapes in the St Paul’s area. On this walk you will discover how this square mile maintained a global empire through its control of trading, skills and culture. See how formal trading was initially centred on 17th century coffee houses in alleys between the River Thames and the Royal Exchange.  Edward Lloyds’ Coffee House was the best attended and grew into a vital business in the City. Learn how the 110 livery companies controlled the skills of the traders through their guilds.  Find evidence of the Anglican church spreading its word through that very same trading empire and having its own impact. You will witness how the Square Mile first supported slavery and then mercifully turned its influence to abolish this abhorrent trade. To assist this narrative the walk will take you past The Bank of England, the site of former coffee houses, the offices of various City institutions, The Mansion House, Guildhall, The London Stock Exchange and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Francis West gave us a fascinating talk last September about how easy your systems can be hacked. Technology and hackers are constantly evolving and Francis will update us on more recent concerns to be dealt with. He has spent over 30 years delivering IT and cyber security solutions to businesses. In 1993 he launched FWCS Support providing solutions for recruitment, estate agents and the education sector. In 2010 he leached Westtek Solutions which redefines IT support to the SME sector. In 2012 he won ‘Innovator of the Year’ from the South African Chamber of Commerce. We have a fantastic opportunity to dine at the famous Merchants’ Hall, courtesy of the Society of Merchant Venturers of Bristol. The Hall is located on the Clifton Promenade, with lovely views over the river Avon. The evening will start with drinks on the terrace, followed by a black tie dinner. Our guests will include Professor Mark Clatworthy, Head of the award-winning School for Accounting and Finance at the University of Bristol and serial education technology entrepreneur, and Merchant Venturer, Heather Frankham. Places cost £88. The next morning, there is the option to enjoy (1) a two-hour free walking tour in Bristol of Banksy’s murals and artwork, or (2) a guided tour of the SS Great Britain (£16). A pub lunch may be arranged after those tours. This visit should be great fun, and teach us about a famous Guild beyond the City.

As you may know, the 2022 UK Livery Masters' Weekend is being held in Sheffield that weekend, hosted by the Lord Mayor, so this is a sneak preview. The evening will start with a guided tour of Cutlers' Hall, with its extraordinary grandeur and many fascinating artifacts (Knives feature heavily!), followed by a drinks reception and a three-course dinner with wines in the lovely Drawing Room. Court Only Dinner

This year the Master is delighted to be holding this always-enjoyable event in the lovely Members’ Private Dining Room, up on the third floor of Guildhall. This panelled room boasts a splendid silver collection, some fascinating documents on the walls and fine views across Guildhall Yard to the Art Gallery opposite. As you know, the Dinner is traditionally held straight after our June Court Meeting, begins with a drinks reception, and is an opportunity for our Livery’s key leadership group to dine together, discuss the issues of the day and enjoy each other’s company. Dress is Livery Uniform/Black Tie and the equivalent for ladies. By custom, badges of office are not worn.  Pour Mémoire cards will also not be sent out this year, as part of the Company’s support for decarbonisation. Tickets are £95 each and will be invoiced after booking. Please book in by noon on Friday 10th June. Equally, it would be helpful if you would let me know if you cannot come. History of Tax – Paying for the Renaissance (online event)

Have you ever wondered how the Renaissance was paid for? Florence was one of Italy’s richest city-states but also one whose rulers were acutely conscious of both the shortfalls of the tax base on which it rested and the problems the tax system was causing (such as depopulation). The talk will cover what was taxed and how as well as other features of Florentine finance that tackled tax evasion. The speaker Andrew Loader is a former history scholar of Christ’s College, Cambridge and Past Consort of the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers. This event will be on zoom, is free to attend and no prior booking is necessary.

Shrieval Election and Lunch at Guildhall

Twice a year, the City of London Corporation’s Common Hall is transformed from a standard local authority meeting on civic issues, into a day of great ceremony. Each autumn Liverymen elect the next year’s Lord Mayor and every summer, it’s the turn of the two Sheriffs. The Shrieval election ceremony starts at noon (There is no admission after 11.45am.) and ends around 12.30-12.45pm. Dress is lounge suit for men and smart day wear for ladies. After Common Hall, most Liveries go home, but our Master always hosts a private Reception and Lunch. We go up to Guildhall’s roof terrace on the fourth floor for the Reception and then into the Aldermen’s Dining Room for lunch. The day is very much one for partners and guests too. This year, as an extra, it has been possible to secure some places at the annual Armed Forces Flag Raising in Guildhall Yard. For those who would like to stay on to see it, this takes place at 3.15pm, lasts about 30 minutes, and is rather a nice sign of respect for our military from the City. Common Hall and the Flag Raising are free, and this year the Lunch costs £75. The Dining Room only holds 28 guests, so places will have to be allocated on as first-come-first-served basis.

Grange Festival Visit to see Verdi’s Macbeth

The Grange Festival is one of those extraordinary events that is really hard to describe. You have to see it to believe it – especially as it is about so much more than the performances themselves. His version of the play is full of threat and ferocity, an intense exploration of ruthless ambition in a world governed by superstition and violence. Lady Macbeth dominates and the chorus, who are both observers and protagonists, is given some of Verdi’s most thrilling choral writing. St Paul’s Cathedral Orchestral Mass followed by Lunch

Since 1973, Orchestral Masses had been a well-established annual feature of choral worship at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Masses stopped during the lockdown and the lack of tourist income meant the Cathedral was not in a position to reintroduce them. The Charity Trustees agreed last year to make a donation to St Paul’s to enable the first Orchestral Mass since the pandemic to be held. As a result an Orchestral Mass by Mozart will be held under the Dome of St Paul’s as part of the Sunday morning Eucharist on Sunday 10th July at 11:15am. Members and their guests are invited to attend the mass. There is no charge although contributions to St Paul’s would be welcome. After the Mass the team at St Paul’s have invited representatives from the Company to join them for pre-lunchtime drinks in the Chapter House, so that they may express their gratitude for the Charity’s support. You are welcome to join us for lunch at Cote afterwards - places for lunch are limited to 20.

Swan Upping on the Thames near Henley

All aboard The Waterman! The day will start at Henley-on-Thames at 11.15am for an 11.30am departure, on the beautiful, double-decked Waterman. As we cruise down the Thames, a Swan Upper will explain the history of Swan Upping, while we all enjoy a glass or two of Pimm's and some delicious canapes. We will then sit down to a three-course lunch with wines, while keeping tabs on the swans and their signets. The afternoon will conclude at about 3.30pm, when we will dock back at Henley, hopefully having seen several swans upped and no uppers dunked! Tickets are £110 and numbers are limited, so they will have to be restricted to two per Member (ie themselves, plus a guest) and also allocated on a first- come-first-served basis.   Ticket sales have now ended for this event.

Talk: David Redfern from GlaxoSmithKline on the development of vaccines

Have you ever wondered about how vaccines are developed, where perhaps the next major medical breakthrough will come from? Also just how much is spent on developing new vaccines? Join us for a fascinating talk from David Redfern, Chief Strategy Officer of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). David will discuss GSK’s and the pharmaceutical industry’s current approach to the research and development of new medicines and vaccines, including specifically for covid, but also across oncology, infectious diseases such as HIV, neuroscience and other disease areas, and therefore where the significant medical advances are likely to be over the next decade. David joined GSK in 1994. David was appointed Chairman of the Board of ViiV Healthcare Ltd in 2011 and is a Non-Executive Director of the Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Limited Board in 2015. River Walk and Drinks

Enjoy an evening walk along the river ending at a pub! Meeting at 5.15pm, the group will set off along the Thames Path between Lambeth Bridge and Tower Bridge. Taking in the sights (and answering some quiz questions!) the walk will be approximately 3 miles, and take an hour and a half.     You are welcome to do the whole walk, join the walk at a point along the way, or just meet up at the pub! There is no charge for the walk, but everyone is responsible for their own drinks and food costs. This October, the Master-elect is inviting members to the magnificent Fishmongers' Hall, by London Bridge to mark the start of his year. The Hall is famous for its fantastic architecture, splendid views across the Thames and the iconic portrait of Her Majesty by the then unknown Pietro Annigoni, which is now so valuable that it even has its own safe! Last, and by no means least, the Master's primary guest will be Noel Quinn, the CEO of HSBC, who is sure to say some interesting things about the global economy and possibly how his career took him from qualifying as a Chartered Accountant to becoming the CEO of one of the largest banks in the world. Freedom of the City talk

What is the Freedom of the City and how do you get it? Tuesday 18 October - 6.30pm on Zoom Ever wondered what Freedom of the City means? Or what is involved in getting it yourself? As a Freeman of the Chartered Accountants Livery Company, you can apply to become a Freeman of the City of London as well. If you wish to progress to become a Liveryman of our Company you first need to obtain the Freedom of the City. Join us for a talk from Laura Miller, Clerk to the Chamberlain's Court who will run through the history, meaning, and the process of applying for Freedom of the City and continuing on to become of Liveryman. Also attending will be newly clothed Liveryman Vicky Andrew to talk to you about her experience along with some other longer standing Liverymen. There will be an opportunity to ask any questions you think of and, hopefully, be fully prepared to start the process! The Livery Treasures Talk and Supper – CANCELLED

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Your chance to see the Livery Treasures up close!  Speaker – Michael Fowle assisted by our Beadle Simon Barraclough During our Company’s comparatively short life to date we have been fortunate in building up a significant collection of silver and other treasures, thanks to the generosity of many Past Masters, other Members and friends. Much of it is used at our Dinners. Michael will tell us about their history, what the motifs mean and their symbolic use. One of our earliest gifts is the Company’s Mace, the head of which is detached and placed before the Master at dinner. Michael is now entrusted with looking after our Treasures including amongst other things keeping an inventory, inspecting them regularly and valuing them for insurance purposes! This promises to be a fascinating talk and during the evening you will have the chance to hold some of the treasures under the watchful eye of our Beadle! Curry Night at The Oriental Club

Back by popular demand, we have scheduled our second curry night of the year at The Oriental Club, the well-known private members' club in the West End. Festival of St. Cecilia Service and Lunch

Join together at Westminster Abbey to celebrate the value of music. The Festival of St. Cecilia has been the flagship event in Help Musicians’ calendar since 1946. It is a key moment for us to come together to celebrate what music brings to all of us, and to mark the contribution that musicians make to our lives. This year, the combined choirs of Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral and St Paul’s Cathedral will unite to perform under the direction of James O’Donnell, the Abbey’s Organist and Master of Choristers. The service will premiere a specially created anthem by composer, Nico Muhly, and we are privileged to welcome Help Musicians Ambassador Lesley Garrett CBE and Musicians Company Master Jeff Kelly for spoken contributions. The service will also include music from clarinettist Josh Pyman, who the charity has supported. The service will be held at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 23 November 2022, starting at 11am, and will be followed by an optional lunch. More details of how to book coming soon.

Carol Service and Drinks

St Mary-Le-Bow Cheapside, London

This year's service will be held in St Mary le Bow Church, the church of the famous Bow Bells! With the Choristers from the Bread Street Choir of St Paul's Cathedral School, this is a lovely way to mark the Christmas Season with fellow Livery members. The church is of Saxon origins, with a Norman crypt, that was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666 by Sir Christopher Wren. It was badly bombed from enemy aircraft during the Blitz in 1941, and restored between 1956-1964. The sound of the bells of St Mary's is prominent in the story of Dick Whittington in which the bells are credited with having persuaded him to turn back from Highgate and remain in London to become Lord Mayor. Traditionally, people living within earshot of Bow Bells are considered to be "Cockney”. The church itself is beautiful inside as well as light, airy and a perfect setting for the annual Carol Service, which for many members marks the real start of the festive season. After the service, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy drinks and canapes in the stunning, ancient crypts below the church. A lovely opportunity to enjoy some festive music and celebrate the season with fellow Livery Company members. Winter Dinner

Drapers' Hall Throgmorton Avenue, London

The Annual Winter Dinner follows a court meeting and is an opportunity for the whole Livery Company to come together for a Black Tie dinner in a beautiful City venue. Set beneath the dramatic ceiling paintings, depicting Shakespearean scenes by 19th Century artist Herbert Draper, the Drapers' Livery Hall is one of the City's finest event spaces. Having been used in films as a double for Buckingham Palace, the room displays the Drapers’ Company’s collection of royal portraits and some of the larger pieces from its silver collection. The speaker for the evening will be the famous and famously frank, Jon Moulton, who will regale us with tales of his life as a venture capitalist and maybe share a few tips on successful investing. True and Fair Lecture

Our True and Fair Lecture is always a high-point of our Company’s year. This time our speaker is Michael Moore. As private capital has continued to increase its contribution to the UK economy in recent years, Michael and his colleagues in the industry have been focused on supporting the COVID-19 recovery, delivering investment nationwide, making it one of the best places in the world to invest and do business and supporting the drive to ‘Net Zero’. For 30 years Michael has operated at senior levels in both politics and business. He was an MP for 18 years and served in the Cabinet during the Coalition, as Secretary of State for Scotland. After the 2015 general election, Michael became a Senior Adviser at PwC.  Prior to entering politics, he qualified as a chartered accountant with the firm. After he has delivered his remarks, Michael has kindly agreed to take questions, so feel free to come along and be as robust as you like! As you know, we always make an evening of it, with teas and coffees from 5.30pm, then the lecture at 6pm, and then finally a drinks reception with canapes until 8pm. United Guilds’ Service and Lunch 2023

The UGS was first held in February 1943 as a coordinated response to the challenges faced by the City of London following the Blitz of 1940-41. It was also a reminder of the religious origins of the Guilds. The first service to be conducted was held on Lady Day – 25th March 1943 - the first day of the year by the old calendar. This annual service is held at St Pauls Cathedral with a limited number of tickets being allocated to each Livery Company. Tickets are limited so please ensure you book in plenty of time. The Master and Wardens of the Stationers’ Company are delighted to invite you and your Liverymen to join them at Stationers’ Hall for Lunch, following the United Guilds’ Service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday, 24 March 2023. The Winter’s Tale at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

ST GEORGE’S DAY BANQUET 2023

The City of London Branch is delighted to have the opportunity to return to the Great Hall of London’s Guildhall on Friday 21st April, with our annual banquet to celebrate St George’s Day. On this occasion, we will have as our guest Sheriff Andrew Marsden and his consort Marian. The evening will commence with a sparkling wine reception at 6:30pm, followed by dinner at 7:30pm, there will be the traditional parade of Roast Beef and the singing of patriotic songs led by Soprano Anna Gregg. Common Hall – HAC

Common Hall is the WCCAEW equivilant of an AGM and takes place after a Court meeting, and before the Spring Dinner. All members are invited to attend this meeting at 5.30pm, before rejoining their guests for drinks and dinner from 6.30pm. This year's meeting and dinner will be held at the Honourable Artillary Company and guests will have the opportunity to tour the armoury and museum. More details will be available shortly

Clergy Support Trust Festival

The Clergy Support Trust Festival will be held for the 368th time, starting at 5pm, Tuesday 9 May 2023. The Service at St Paul's Cathedral is the oldest choral festival in the world. Free and open to everyone, it brings together three of the UK’s finest cathedral choirs. This year we welcome the choirs of Llandaff and Leicester Cathedrals to join St Paul's Cathedral choir. The Festival is a unique and extraordinary event. It celebrates the work of the Trust and the clergy families we serve, with our generous supporters.
