Winter Dinner

Drapers' Hall Throgmorton Avenue, London

The Annual Winter Dinner follows a court meeting and is an opportunity for the whole Livery Company to come together for a Black Tie dinner in a beautiful City venue. Set beneath the dramatic ceiling paintings, depicting Shakespearean scenes by 19th Century artist Herbert Draper, the Drapers' Livery Hall is one of the City's finest event spaces. Having been used in films as a double for Buckingham Palace, the room displays the Drapers’ Company’s collection of royal portraits and some of the larger pieces from its silver collection. The speaker for the evening will be the famous and famously frank, Jon Moulton, who will regale us with tales of his life as a venture capitalist and maybe share a few tips on successful investing. Brize Norton – Flight and Lunch

RAF Brize Norton, Carterton OX18 3LX RAF Brize Norton, Caterton

Our SMiLO has organised a rare flying visit with 47 Squadron to mark the long association between the Company and our affiliated unit. As the Squadron is to be disbanded in 30 June 2023, this is not only a rare flying opportunity, but the last one. The visit will include welcome coffee, flight briefing, a flight (probably to the Severn estuary and perhaps a simulated beach landing - all subject to weather and ATC ), followed by a light lunch in the Officer’s Mess. Please respond to Clare on clareferrar@accountantslivery.org by Friday 12 May at 12noon. If there are more than 20 applicants there will be a ballot for places, and a reserve list.

St Paul’s Orchestral Mass

St Paul's Cathedral St Paul's Churchyard, London, United Kingdom

Following the continued support of the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity, WCCAEW members and guests are invited to attend a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass on Sunday 9 July at 11.15am, followed by drinks in the Chapter House. The St Paul's Cathedral Choir and the City of London Sinfonia will perform Haydn's Missa in angustiis at this Sung Eucharist.  This work which translates as 'Mass for troubled times,' is one of the six masses written near the end of Joseph Haydn's life.  Also known as the 'Nelson Mass' it was first performed in 1798. Based on a German tradition, where every movement of a mass is performed with an orchestra, this Orchestral Mass has become a well-established and popular highlight at St Paul’s Cathedral – proving a significant draw for worshippers and visitors alike. The Covid pandemic had a hugely negative impact on St Paul’s Cathedral’s finances. Historically the Cathedral has been heavily reliant on visitor (especially tourist) income to provide 80% of the running costs. They have had to make significant financial savings since 2020 to sustain their operations, including reducing their workforce by 25%, and cutting back on some of their operations including reducing the activity of their famous Choir. St Paul's Cathedral's traditional Orchestral Mass series of four performances is entirely subject to the Cathedral receiving funding. There were no such Masses in 2020 or 2021 and just one in 2022 which was only made possible thanks to the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity grant and our Music Patrons support. What can I expect? Sung Eucharists is the high point of our weekly worship, engaging the senses with sound, colour and movement. This service includes choral and orchestral music, hymn singing and a sermon, During the service, the congregation will be invited to share in the bread and wine....

Installation Dinner 2023

Goldsmiths' Hall Foster Lane, London, United Kingdom

Our annual Livery Company year always starts during the month of October and this autumn, after a most successful year, during which we have been led with considerable style and panache by Master Richard Green, we will enter the mastership of current Master-Elect, Kevin Parry. For the first time in a decade, we have just secured Goldsmiths’ Hall for the next Installation Dinner. It has arguably the City’s finest hall and reception rooms. For dinner, that hall will be lit entirely by candlelight and we anticipate an exquisite collection of gold, gilt and jewellery will be on display in there and downstairs. Our speaker for the evening was due to be Lord Gerry Grimstone, the recent government minister and former Chairman of Barclays, amongst other roles. Sadly, Gerry has been taken ill and so instead, guests will hear from Lord Theodore Agnew. Theodore had a very distinguished business and governmental career, ending up as both a Cabinet Office and a Treasury Minister. His penchant for speaking his mind and actually getting things done, marked him out for business success at an early stage, but perhaps meant he was less likely to last for too long in the upper echelons of politics! Happily for the country, Theodore continues as a doughty campaigner in the House of Lords and much of what he says represents what existing Ministers think, but seldom feel quite able to say. In business, he has built and sold numerous companies, including a slightly unusual one in Australia, and is a past trustee of Policy Exchange, the Westminster think tank. At present, he has a financial interest in the artificial intelligence company, Faculty, Lastly, Theodore is the founder and chairman of a multi-academy trust, which runs fourteen schools in East Anglia. The Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths is...

Winter Dinner 2024

Stationers' Hall Ave Maria Ln, London, United Kingdom

This year's Winter Dinner will be held in the historic Stationers' Hall on Wednesday, 7th February. Stationers' Hall is a Grade I listed building, close to St Paul's Cathedral. It is one of the few ancient Livery Halls remaining in the City of London. Completed in 1673 after the Great Fire of London, the Hall's suite of magnificent, inter-linking rooms, as well as its secluded garden, makes it one of the most sought after venues in the City. After the meal, Members and their guests will hear from Geordie Greig, who, after a distinguished career in the press, including a tour as Editor of the Daily Mail, is now the Editor of The Independent. He will doubtless have plenty to say about the current state of the media and how he sees what is likely to an eventful next 12 months unfolding! Annual Banquet 2024

Mansion House Walbrook, London, United Kingdom

This year's Banquet will be held at Mansion House on Tuesday, 23rd July. The occasion is always the highpoint of our Livery's year, and this occasion will be no exception. As many Members will know, until the mid-18th century, Lord Mayors used their own houses or livery halls for their work as head of the City's governmental, judicial and civic functions. The idea of creating a permanent residence came after the Great Fire of 1666 to provide a house for Lord Mayors who did not have their own livery hall. The first stone was laid in 1739, and the first Lord Mayor to take up residence was Sir Crispin Gascoigne. The House was completed in 1758. Imposingly Palladian in style, it is faced by a grand temple portico at the front approached by flights of steps each side. The entertaining rooms were built on the first and second floors. The first floor had a roofless courtyard (later covered to form the Salon, the entertainment space) and the great Egyptian Hall. The second floor has a ballroom and private apartments of the Lord Mayor and family. After we have dined, Members and their guests will hear from The Chairman of the Bank of England, David Roberts. David's career began at Barclays, where he worked for over 20 years, rising to sit on the main board. He has also been Vice-Chair of NHS England, Chairman of Nationwide, and Deputy Chairman of Lloyds Banking Group. Currently however, his role as Chairman of our nation's central bank keeps him extremely busy and he will no doubt be keen to explain what the Bank of England is currently doing and why - rather brave, really, to a room full of chartered accountants! Tickets: £169 Time: 6.45pm - Drinks, 7.15pm - Call for Dinner, 10.30pm - Carriages...

Installation Dinner 2024

Merchant Taylors' Hall 30 Treadneedle Street, London, United Kingdom

It’s decades since we last dined at Merchant Taylors’ Hall, which is very much one of “The Big Four” (We’ve been to all of Drapers, Goldsmiths, and Fishmongers in the past two years.). Hidden away behind anonymous facade, just east of the Bank of England, lies a collection of grand reception rooms and a lovely courtyard garden. The Great Hall itself is very splendid and the only one in London with an organ. As well as starting the new Livery year in style, and Installing Jonathan Grosvenor as Master, we have several things to celebrate!  - Firstly, our splendid Beadle has served us for ten years, and we all wish to mark this milestone with a suitable presentation. - Secondly, there is our Sword of Honour to present to the best contributor to our fine 47 Squadron Association. - Lastly, but by no means least, we have a number of presentations to recent Past Masters. The Almoner will give a short update on the grants the Trustees have been making on our behalf, plus the first of our small appeals, made on big dinner nights this coming year, at which a Member will ask us to support a specific fundraiser of limited size, to which they are personally committed. As for entertainment, the meal, the fellowship and the lovely surroundings apart, we will take fully advantage of the organ, with a short concert after dinner. The Master-elect has persuaded our own Miles Hedges, who is a fine singer, to join up with leading Australian soprano, Samantha Hargreaves, and fine baritone, David Bole (a former state trumpeter, no less!) and the well-known City Minstrel, Julian Cable on the organ, to light up the Hall with a range of songs, the last of which should blow the roof off (Just don’t tell...

Tour of the Roman Amphitheatre under Guildhall and the Art Gallery

Guildhall Gresham Street, London, United Kingdom

Very few people know that underneath Guildhall is a large Roman amphitheatre, which occupied most of what is now the site of Guildhall Yard and the Great Hall. This was one of the centre-pieces of Roman Londinium, and the venue for countless gladiatorial contests, pageants and other displays. Some 2,000 years after they were built, few such amphitheatres survive in the UK and this is the only one which is so intact. It is also the only one to which the public can gain access - albeit by dint of much begging! We have been granted that privilege, but only for a maximum of 15 people, because the fabric of the arena has to be preserved from the tread of countless feet. Our guide is also going to give us a private tour of the Art Gallery, which we sometimes pass through on our way to big City Civic events - the cloakroom and loos are in the basement! It has a HUGE and ever-growing collection, including one of the original Magna Cartas. So hurry and book the very limited number of places (Capacity means Members can bring just one guest each.) for a ninety-minute visit, meeting our guide at Guildhall's West Wing entrance at 6pm. We will start with a tour of the Gallery and then descend underground and walk out onto the sand of the arena, slipping back in history over two millennia, to stand where countless battles were fought and some of our City's historic foundations were cast. After the tour, you are free to head home, or you can join the Master for supper at The Trading House, a few yards away in Gresham Street, where everyone can choose what they wish to eat and then squabble over the bill!

Court and Trustees’ Consorts Dinner

Army and Navy Club 36 - 39 Pall Mall, London, United Kingdom

This annual event is open to Members and former Members of Court and to the Trustees of our Charity, plus their Consorts. The evening provides an opportunity for everyone to socialise together and most importantly, to discuss issues surrounding our Company's and Charity's governance, fundraising and grant making. The speaker is usually someone who can add to such discussions. This year, the Dinner is being held at the Army and Navy Club at the western end of Pall Mall, and our guest speaker will be the CO of our newest military affiliate. After the meal, the Colonel will address us on the welfare challenges that he and his SLT face in relation to their soldiers, many of whom are quite young. Dress for the evening is black tie or livery uniform, and invitations will go out shortly to those eligible to attend. Places are priced up and invoiced after the event, once all the costs are known.

Private tour of the Tower of London and Ceremony of the Keys

Tower of London St Katherine's & Wapping, London, United Kingdom

When Duke William of Normandy won the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and marched north to London, he struck a deal with the Masters of the then Guilds to protect the City in return for their fealty. The first evidence of that protection was King William I's construction and manning of what became known as the White Tower, to guard London from Viking raiding parties coming up the Thames. Today, that Tower stands in the middle of the much larger Royal fortress and palace; the Tower of London. Every night, the Tower is locked up and made secure in what has become known as the Ceremony of the Keys. That ceremony is open to small parties to watch, by kind permission of the Governor of the Tower. We have been granted this privilege, and also a private tour of the Tower itself, led by a Yeoman Warder. For security reasons, our party is limited to 50 people and we will all need to be at the main entrance to the Tower on its west side by 7.15pm, so the Warders and soldiers can check the attendance list prior to our admission. Once inside, a Yeoman Warder will lead us on a private tour of the silent fortress for about an hour, answering our questions along the way, before taking us the "The Keys", the Warders' private pub. There, we can have a drink and join in a raffle for various Tower-related souvenirs. For historical reasons to do with transactions on military bases and inside Royal palaces (The Tower is both.), both the bar and the raffle operate on a cash-only basis, so remember to bring some notes with you. Then, we will all be led back out into the dark to visit the famous ravens, and to watch the Ceremony...

Carol Service at the Chapel Royal inside the Tower of London and Supper at Watermen’s Hall

Tower of London St Katherine's & Wapping, London, United Kingdom

As well as very kindly granting the Company a private tour of the Tower on 20th November, and ringside seats at that evening's Ceremony of the Keys, the Governor has also given us permission to hold this year's Carol Service in their Chapel Royal. The Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula stands in the north-east corner of the fortress and dates from the reign of King Henry VIII, but it is merely the latest church on the site, which has been holy ground since the Dark Ages. For those who wish to take a general tour beforehand and see the Crown Jewels, it has been agreed that we can buy tickets for entry between 3pm and 4pm, at a cost of £32 each. Then, once the Tower closes, rather than being asked to wait outside for the service, we are going to be allowed to have a drink in the Yeoman Warders' private pub, The Keys, until 6pm. (Note: this is a cash-only bar.) Members and their guests who do not wish to visit the Tower of London before the Carol Service need to come to the main entrance on the western side of the fortress at 6pm.   At 6pm, everyone will led up to the Chapel Royal and given a talk on its history and present day role. The service itself will begin at 6.30pm and should last about an hour. The cost of attending the service (which goes towards the choir etc) is £28.         After the service, Members and their guests can either leave for home, or walk to Watermen's Hall, seven minutes away, for canapés and drinks, with a Christmas theme, the cost of which is £49 per person.     Tower of London, Crown Jewels, The Keys pub 3pm-6pm £32 (plus...

Dinner at the RAF Club in Piccadilly

RAF Club 128 Piccadilly, London, United Kingdom

London boasts about twenty rather smart private members clubs, several of which have a military focus, and by general agreement the RAF Club, at the western end of Piccadilly, up by Hyde Park Corner, is one of the most attractive and intimate. (The wall art's pretty amazing too!) We are lucky to have close links with the service, both through our relationship with 47 Squadron, and also because Court Assistant Neeraj Kapur used to fly Tornados for a living, and today still flies fast jets! (He never mentions any of this, unless pressed!) As a result, Neeraj has kindly agreed to host 22 of us for a private Dinner at the Club, with a drinks reception and tour beforehand, and a senior speaker from the RAF to talk to us after the meal. The RAF Club is always popular and heavily booked, but we have managed to secure the lovely Cowdrey Lounge for our drinks reception and then the equally splendid Hodges Room for the Dinner. Tickets: £109 (the price below may show as excl VAT but should update at checkout) Guest are welcome, but there are only 26 places available so booking early is advisable Dress code: Lounge suits for men and the equivalent for ladies Drinks: 6.30pm Dinner: 7pm

“Trial & Error” at Old Bailey

Old Bailey Old Bailey, City of London

About ten years ago, a group of judges and barristers were chatting idly about how to raise some limited funds for a prison charity, and some bright spark had the idea of putting on an evening of amateur dramatics in the world-famous No 1 Court at Old Bailey. Devised by then Judge, His Honour Peter Rook KC, who was based there, the first year was pretty modest in scale, but since then the whole mad enterprise has taken on a life of its own. These days, leading City figures fight to be allowed to humiliate themselves in front of an appreciative (and pretty well-oiled, thanks to the drinks beforehand) audience of City Civic and legal folk. All profits from the evening go to the Sheriffs' and Recorder's Fund (helping prison leavers), the Elizabeth Fry Charity (giving women a second chance) and the Schools Consent Project (lawyers teaching the legal definition of consent in secondary schools, to reduce offending rates). This year the Master is leading a party of up to ten to the Wednesday, 19th March performance (Doors open at 6pm, drinks reception from 6.15pm, curtain up at 7pm, and an end around 8.30pm.), and then on to a light supper afterwards in a nearby restaurant. This is British eccentricity at its most entertaining and you are warmly encouraged to join him - guest are very welcome. (Due to the architectural oddities of Old Bailey and the layout of No 1 Court, this event is probably not suitable for those with mobility issues.) Tickets to the show cost £70 each, and then those who wish to stay on for the supper will share their restaurant bill.

Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch – Sold Out

Guildhall Gresham Street, London, United Kingdom

Originally described by some wags as "The City of London's hottest annual event", this now enormous annual charity fundraiser began back in 2008 on a very small scale. Hosted by the Lord Mayor, over the years it has grown and grown, until today it takes over the whole of Guildhall and raises going on half a million pounds annually. At its core, the Lunch demonstrates the City’s support for members of His Majesty’s Armed Forces and veterans, through the three National Service Charities: The Army Benevolent Fund, The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund. It does this via a huge curry lunch, held in a packed Great Hall, plus a silent auction for some pretty splendid lots, held in the Old Library. The Master is going to the 2pm sitting and invites up to nine members and their guests to join him. As well as being delicious, the whole occasion is very much "A sight to see" - certainly, you won't be able to watch over 300 people, all guzzling curry in shifts, anywhere else! Tickets cost £110 and were allocated on a "first-come-first-served basis".

Two “Flights” on the London Eye

London Eye Riverside Building +1 more

The London Eye is the iconic ferris wheel on the south bank of the Thames, just opposite the Palace of Westminster. From the top, those travelling in the enclosed gondolas can see all across London and, on a clear day, out beyond the M25. Now in its 25th year of operation, those who take one of the "flights" as they are styled, report that the amazing view during daylight hours is starkly different from what it looks like, gazing down on our nation's capital, all lit up at night. To test this and enjoy that contrast, the Master is leading a party of ten Members and guests on a 6.15pm flight, to see London laid out before them in daylight. Then, our party will repair to a local restaurant for a restorative supper, before returning for the 8.15pm flight, which will begin as dusk falls, enabling everyone to enjoy the full night-time experience. The price of £109 includes both flights, and a light supper with wine, and one of the official souvenir brochures. Dress is casual, with an emphasis on wrapping up reasonably warm, for what may well be a slight evening chill.

St George’s Day Banquet with the RSSG – Sold Out

Drapers' Hall Throgmorton Avenue, London

The Royal Society of St George (aka The RSSG) is a global British patriotic society, and has one of its most active branches in the City of London. Routinely chaired by former Lord Mayors, Sheriffs and other senior figures from the Corporation, it effectively functions like a Livery Company. The highlight of the RSSG's annual social round is, perhaps inevitably, a massive Banquet on St George's Day. The event has been described by many as "The last night of the Proms with a swanky Banquet thrown in", and we periodically send a party along to join in - during PM John Cardnell's year, over 40 members and their guests went along and had a great time. This year it is being held at the magnificent Drapers' Hall and the RSSG has again invited us to join them, and as the Spring Dinner is already sold out, it seemed a great idea to accept. So the Master and Mistress will lead our party and it is hoped that you and any guests can come along too, enjoy the four-course, roast-beef-centred-dinner, with wines, coffee and chocs etc, and then wave your flags with the best of them during the sing song. Tickets cost £179 each, dress is black tie, and rather encouragingly, the drinks reception, which starts at 6.30pm, lasts a whole hour!

Visit to Highgate Cemetery and Supper

Highgate Cemetery Swain's Lane, London, United Kingdom

The world-famous Highgate Cemetery, with its iconic tombs (Karl Marx etc) was originally opened in 1839, as part of a commercial venture to provide seven large, modern cemeteries, round the edge of central London. The inner-city cemeteries, mostly graveyards attached to churches, had long been unable to cope with the number of burials and "The Magnificent Seven" were intended to solve this problem, and to turn a profit at the same time. Highgate occupies a spectacular south-facing hillside site on Highgate Hill. Like the other six, it soon became a fashionable place for burials and the Victorian attitude to death and its presentation led to the creation of a wealth of Gothic tombs, buildings and catacombs. Sadly, the cemetery was not well run and fell into such dire financial straits in the Mid-20th Century that most of the staff, including the gardeners were laid off, and it was left unguarded and so was much vandalised. Over decades, the grounds became increasingly overgrown and today they are full of trees, shrubbery, and wildflowers, as well as being a haven for birds and small animals, such as foxes. In 1975, Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust bought the freehold, and order is steadily being restored to what has, despite its troubled history, remained a working cemetery throughout. With its sinuous paths winding up a steep wooded hill and ivy-clad monuments, Highgate Cemetery is a secluded, funerary landscape at its most evocative. We will have a hour's private tour of the Western Cemetery (considered by those who have visited both, to be much the more interesting), after the gates have shut to the public for the day. We will be shown all the key sites there, before slipping across the road to visit Karl Marx's tomb and a few other items on the Eastern...

Livery Tour and Dinner on SS Great Britain – Sold Out

SS Great Britain Great Western Dockyard, Gas Ferry Rd, Bristol

The SS Great Britain is the world’s first great ocean liner and when launched in 1843 she was called ‘the greatest experiment since the creation’. After 40 years as a passenger ship and then a cargo ship, she was severely damaged off Cape Horn and left to rot in the Falkland Islands until 1970, when she was re-floated and bought back to Bristol, where a charity refurbished her and cares for the ship and Brunel’s collections. Brunel’s ship is now Bristol’s number one tourist attraction and has been lovingly restored to her original glory, exactly as she would have been ready for her maiden voyage. She sits in a dry dock on a glass ‘sea’ and dominates Bristol’s historic waterfront. This is a very rare opportunity to dine on the this world-famous ship, as London's Liveries, (led by the Engineers, naturally!), have her for our exclusive use that evening. A welcome drink which will be served on the Weather Deck from 6pm, with spectacular views over Bristol harbour. If the weather is less kind, we will use the Promenade Deck, where the first-class passengers would take their afternoon stroll on rainy days. This is flooded with natural light and has a number of exhibits that we can explore. At 7:30pm we will assemble for Dinner in the First Class Dining Saloon, which has been completely refurbished in the original style. With marbled pillars and rococo mirrors it makes a grand setting. A three-course meal will be served, with wine. There will be entertainment after the meal and further drinks will be available to purchase. We have exclusive use of the Great Britain from 6pm to midnight and are invited to explore it, making the most of this unique venue. The ship is easy to reach by car, public transport or...

Pride and Prejudice (Sort of!)

Watford Palace Theatre 20 Clarendon Road, Watford

Our Livery has a history of organising visits to leading theatrical events, many of which have won national awards. This show is one of those. Direct from its triumph in the West End where it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy, and the similar Evening Standard Award, amongst other prizes, Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of), is a unique and audacious retelling of Jane Austen’s most iconic love story. Men, money and microphones are fought over in this irreverent but affectionate adaptation, where the stakes couldn’t be higher when it comes to romance. The critics universally hailed it and typical reviews included:: "This smart, laugh out loud funny show” (Daily Telegraph), "Riotously funny ... gloriously entertaining ... frankly sensational" (Variety), "Faithful to the book, it's also a raucously irreverent romp" (Daily Mail), "It's a blast: Austen turbocharged with utter theatrical audacity" (The i), "Profoundly joyous" (Glasgow Herald) and "Layer upon layer of brilliance" (The Scotsman). The show  also features a string of classic songs, suitably woven into the storyline, and what is amazing is that the entire tale is told by five energetic young women, supported by an very suitable set and an array of props, including a pantomime horse, a floor mop and some marigold rubber gloves! We have booked some of the best seats in the house for the Saturday matinee performance on 24th May at 2.30pm, and will gather beforehand at 12.30pm at the highly-regarded Il Pelligrino restaurant, which is about 100 yards from the theatre, for a nice lunch. There are only eight tickets available, and guests are welcome, so early booking is advisable.

Tour of the Triforium of St Paul’s

St Paul's Cathedral St Paul's Churchyard, London, United Kingdom

Most Livery Members, after a while, would describe themselves as fairly familiar with our great Cathedral. After all, it is effectively the City Civic's "parish church" (For a start, there is nothing else locally, which is big enough to fit us all in!) and there are services and concerts there, throughout the year. However, what we routinely see, down at floor level, is by no means all that Wren's architectural triumph has to offer, and so this June a party of up to 20 of us will be taken on a private tour of those parts of the Cathedral which the public seldom sees. Our guide will take us up to the Triforium and into the Library and the Trophy Room. We will also see the Great Model, which played such a crucial role in the development of the building's design and engineering during its construction. Then as a finale, we will enjoy the spectacular view down from the top of the iconic Geometric Staircase and another down the nave, from above the Great West Doors. The tour will start at 2.30pm and last about an hour, and for those feeling peckish, the Master will lead a party to a nearby restaurant for a spot of lunch beforehand. Tickets for the tour cost £39 each. Dress will be "smart casual", and the lunch will be publicised and billed separately, for those who wish to attend.

Shrieval Election and Lunch 2025, with former Sheriff Andrew Marsden

Guildhall Club Guildhall Club, Guildhall West Wing, Gresham St, London, London, United Kingdom

Twice a year, the City of London Corporation’s Common Hall is transformed from a standard local authority meeting on civic issues, into a day of great ceremony. Click here for more history and information. Each autumn, Liverymen elect the next year’s Lord Mayor and every summer, it’s the turn of the two Sheriffs. After Common Hall, many Liveries go home, but the Master Chartered Accountant hosts a private Reception and Lunch in the Aldermen's Dining Room. We go up to Guildhall’s roof terrace on the fourth floor for the Reception and then into the Dining Room for lunch. This summer, we will all be delighted to welcome former Sheriff, Past Master Marketor and former FSG Chairman, Andrew Marsden, as our Principal Guest. Andrew will talk to us after the meal about what happens to you, if lucky enough to be elected Sheriff, between that election and when you actually emerge, blinking into the light, as a shiny new Sheriff in September. Happily, Andrew has promised to be highly indiscrete! Partners and guests are very welcome and will be able to have coffee and explore the Guildhall Gallery, while Liverymen are attending the Election Ceremony.   11.30am - Coffee 11.45am - All attending the Election Ceremony must be seated 12noon - Shrieval Election Ceremony 12.45pm - Drinks in the Aldermen's Dining Room 1.15pm - Lunch in the Aldermen's Dining Room Dress: lounge suit or smart day wear Tickets: £98, for Drinks Reception and Lunch

Master’s Weekend in Poole, visiting the RNLI and the Royal Marines

RNLI HQ Poole

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is one of those great Victorian foundations, the merits of which are as starkly obvious today as they when it was founded. Now a massive national charity, the RNLI today protects seafarers and beach users of all the beaches and waters around the UK, and also those of the Republic of Ireland. It does this through 238 lifeboat stations and 242 lifeguard units. The former deploy a fleet of 432 rescue craft, which they launch about 10,000 times each year, while the latter goes to the aid of some 20,000 people on and around the beaches annually. These services are provided by nearly 10,000 lifeboat volunteers and about 2,500 paid staff, including lifeguards. The RNLI HQ is down in Poole Harbour, where it also recently built a unique and rather smart training college (with extremely comfortable, boat-themed, ensuite bedrooms), which has some rather unusual training facilities. Next door it has constructed an equally specialist factory, in which it builds its iconic and extremely capable lifeboats. For obvious reasons, the public have access to scarcely any of the site, which is entirely focussed on the RNLI volunteers and employees, who go there for its myriad of specialist training courses. However, the Master has persuaded the Principal to allow a party from our Company to stay at the College during the last weekend in June, to see what they do there, how a busy lifeboat station operates, and how the lifeboats are built and maintained. The Royal Marines are one of our nation's two premier light infantry units, and with their amphibious focus, they have bases in various coastal locations around the UK. By chance, one such base is in Poole, located just across the harbour from the RNLI College. We have long affiliated to the key...

Annual Banquet

Mansion House Walbrook, London, United Kingdom

This event is always the highpoint of our Livery's annual social round, and this year should be no exception. Our guests for the evening will include the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, plus at least one Sheriff(!), and there will be other familiar faces too. During the evening we will be clothing at least one of our Livery friends, and also formally affiliating with II Squadron RAF Regt, (in place of our previous relationship with 47 Sqn, which has recently been put to sleep, pending a new role). There will, of course, be the usual quarterly report from the Almoner on the work of our excellent Charity, and grants it has made in the name of all of us. The flash appeal on the evening will be in aid of the Little Princess Trust. This charity makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to the side effects of the treatment for their cancers. Amazingly, most of that hair is donated by other children, who witness the dreadful impact of the hair loss on their young friends. As well as the usual speeches after the meal, there should also be some entertainment. However, that cannot be revealed until the night, but what you will notice on entering the Egyptian Hall to dine, is a stage built to one side. Talking of speakers, the Lord Mayor aside (who is excellent), our external speaker is The Hon Harry Herbert, who is the son of our late Queen's racing manager, and today the UK's leading director of racing syndicates. He has lots of interesting tales to tell from that slightly mad world, and happily for us, only a limited sense of discretion! So come along, bring your family and friends, and  enjoy a spectacular evening out, with all the trimmings and...

Trip to the Proms, Lunch and Tour of the Royal Albert Hall – Sold Out

Royal Albert Hall Kensington Gore, South Kensington, London, United Kingdom

This singular social event on Saturday, 2nd August, has been some nine months in the planning and the Master had all but given up on it, when he received a confirmatory phone call this morning. (Tuesday, the 22nd - somewhat short notice!) The world-famous annual round of concerts known as "The Proms" is a great British summer institution, and made all the more so by the fascinating building in which they are held. Built by private subscription from 1867 to 1871, The Royal Albert Hall is an amazing, circular, covered amphitheatre, overlooking Kensington Gardens, just along from Knightsbridge. Today, the Proms apart, it hosts many of the most amazing public shows, circuses, concerts and spectacles (Tennis, anyone?) in London's annual calendar. The Master has managed to bag three things which make a visit there truly memorable, namely: 1   11am tickets to a top concerts in this year's Proms programme - called Viennese Whirl; 2.  A 1.15pm table for lunch in "Verdi", the Albert Hall's famous Italian restaurant on the first floor; and 3.  A 3pm tour of the Hall itself. Sadly, there are only eight places on this amazing day out, and two of them have already gone, so the remaining six are available on a first-come-first-served basis. In the interests of fairness, you can only bring one guest. The concert will showcase the world's most famous Viennese Waltzes, the lunch should be delicious (We'll do some bistro mathematics for the bill!), and the backstage tour is fascinating. So come and enjoy a real 'bucket list" outing on Saturday, 2nd August. Dress is smart casual.

Summer Lunch at Lord’s Cricket Ground

Lord's Cricket Ground St John's Wood Road, London

Lord's, in leafy St John's Wood, is the spiritual home of the cricketing world. Owned and managed by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the iconic ground boasts some pretty amazing architecture, including the ornate Victorian-era Pavilion, which dominates one end of the field. Many Members are avid cricket followers and regular visitors there, but even for those who are not, a trip to Lord's is to enter a different and extremely interesting world. We are going as guests of the MCC on a day when no matches are being played,  so we should have the place largely to ourselves. We will start with a tour of the ground and then of the Lord's Museum, which houses the original Ashes Urn, amongst many other treasures, before repairing to the Writing Room, overlooking the main cricket square, for lunch. The meal will be the usual three courses, with all the trimmings, and our guest speaker will be the famous England international bowler and latterly, England selector, Angus Fraser. Gus played 87 times for England, and remains the all-time most successful bowler in the West Indies, which was quite a feat when one recalls that in his era it was home to the most fearsome team on the international circuit. Gus was also a long-time giant of the Middlesex County team which included such other greats as Mike Brearley, Andrew Strauss, Mike Gatting, and Phil Edmonds. He followed up his stellar England career by first Captaining the County and then, after a spell as cricket correspondent for The Independent, serving as a highly successful Director of Cricket for 12 years, during which he won an especially nail-biting County Championship final in 2016. Today, Gus is Director of the cricketing charity, Middlesex in the Community, which the Livery has long supported. He will be...

Central London Tour on a Cream Tea Bus

Golden Tours Stop 1 Bulleid Way, London

As the old Routemaster double-decker buses began to approach their retirement from London Transport, intelligent minds turned to the issue of what to do with all these still-working-and-well-maintained icons of our capital's street scene. One wheeze, which was widely scorned when first floated, was to convert a few of them into mobile cream tea restaurants and drive diners around some of London's most famous tourist sites. Roll forward 15 years and the cream tea buses are now a firm fixture on the London scene and it seems only right that our Company should investigate them and see what all the fuss is about! A Livery party is therefore meeting at 3.30pm (so as to avoid there rush hour) near to Victoria Bus Station and from there will be whisked away on a 90-minute tour, whilst sampling an array of scones, sandwiches, cakes and other health foods, plus of course, the obligatory teas and coffees. Tickets cost £45, dress is casual, and Members are very welcome to bring friends and family.

A Day’s Cricket at Lord’s in a private box, as guests of Middlesex CCC

Lord's Cricket Ground St John's Wood Road, London

Over the years, our Livery has formed a strong relationship with Middlesex County Cricket Club, taking private boxes at various County, 50-Over and T20 games, and making donations to the Club's excellent charity; Middlesex in the Community. This September, we have a private box in the iconic Tavern Stand for the third day of Middlesex County Championship match against Derbyshire. As well as being able to watch the match in some style, our party will also be able to enjoy the freedom of the ground, visit the world-famous Lord's Museum, and lunch in the iconic Pavilion. Middlesex is kindly funding box and our match-day tickets, enabling us to donate the entire £90 ticket-cost of our places to their excellent charity. So do come along for a relaxing day at the home of cricket, and support an excellent cause. Dress is jacket and tie for men and the equivalent for ladies (BTW: trousers are fine), tickets cost £90 each, and guests are extremely welcome.

Book of Mormon Theatre Trip and Supper – Sold Out

Prince of Wales Theatre Coventry Street, London

Every so often a show arrives on Broadway or in the West End, which sweeps up all the awards and electrifies the theatre-going public. Obvious examples include, Les Miserables, Phantom, and Hamilton. Recently, it was the outrageous and outstanding (in equal measure) Book of Mormon. This blockbuster musical follows two mis-matched young Mormons, when they are sent to Africa to embark on their missionary work, and the chaos that follows in their wake. When it first appeared on Broadway, Mormon won all the Tony Awards, and tickets changed hands for up to three times their face value! Inevitably the show came to London soon after and here too it swept the boards, winning all the Oliviers, plus numerous other prizes. At one point, the waiting list for tickets was nearly eight months - and that was with two matinees a week! Roll forward to today, three years later, and Mormon is still "packing them in", so we are going to go along and see what all the fuss is about. Because of demand, the theatre has limited our party to just 12 tickets, but they have been kind to us over the price (The Master has friends in low places!) and once the party is booked up, those attending will be circulated about an optional, pre-theatre supper. So come along and enjoy an amazing piece of musical theatre with your livery friends and guests. Tickets cost £49, the show starts at 7.30pm and dress is smart casual.

Sheep Drive, Craft Fair and Lunch – Sold Out

London Bridge and The Little Ship Club

This long-established City fundraiser celebrates a Freeman’s ancient right to bring flocks of sheep over the Thames and into the City's market at Smithfield. This year’s sheep drive takes place on Southwark Bridge, which will close for the day, and as well as the opportunity to drive a small flock of sheep over the bridge (for which you get an official certificate), there is also a craft fair and lunch at a nearby restaurant. Places are hard to come by (It's a "bucket list' thing.), but Clare's managed to secure ten, for the 10.37am slot, so book in and join the Master in experiencing this unique event. (Nobody will believe you when you tell them what you've done!) You can also bring friends and family (anyone over five years old), who get a slightly different certificate, and fancy dress is optional - needless to say, there are usually lots of young Bo Peeps skipping around! Dress is anything from entirely casual, right up to full morning dress, with badges and gowns.

Mayoral Election and Lunch 2025

Guildhall Club Guildhall Club, Guildhall West Wing, Gresham St, London, London, United Kingdom

After the historic ceremony of the Mayoral Election during the morning, the Master invites Company Members and their guests, along with some FSG Masters and their Clerks, to join him upstairs in the Guildhall Club for a private Drinks Reception and Lunch. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy drinks out on the roof terrace before moving into the Aldermen’s Dining Room for lunch. At the Shrieval Election Day Lunch, we heard from former Sheriff Andrew Marsden about what happens behind the scenes, between when Sheriffs are elected and the day they take office. It was very revealing and clearly quite a scramble! We are following the same plan at this September's Mayoral Election Day Lunch, when our Guest of Honour will be former Lord Mayor, Sir David Wootton, who will explain how the year leading up to their entry into Mansion House, typically unfolds for an incoming Lord Mayor. David is an excellent speaker and like Andrew did, has agreed to take questions, under the Chatham House Rule. After lunch, guests are welcome to move back out onto the roof terrace to view the events going on in the square below. 11.30am - Coffee 11.45am - All attending the Election Ceremony must be seated 12noon - Mayoral Election Ceremony 1pm - Drinks in the Aldermen's Dining Room 1.30pm - Lunch in the Aldermen's Dining Room Dress code: Morning dress or lounge suit for men and smart day wear for ladies. Tower of London St Katherine's & Wapping, London, United Kingdom

This year we have obtained special permission to hold our Carol Service once again at the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vinicula within the grounds of the Tower of London. Those who attended last year will recall the spectacular festive lighting of the Tower grounds and the stunning history of this small chapel, which contains the tombs of many notable figures, including three executed Queens of England: Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey, as well as the remains of St Thomas More and St John Fisher. The service will take place in the early evening and will be followed by drinks and canapés at the nearby Bakers Hall, the home of the second-oldest City Guild.
