As the Squadron is to be disbanded in 30 June 2023, this is not only a rare flying opportunity, but the last one. The visit will include welcome coffee, flight briefing, a flight (probably to the Severn estuary and perhaps a simulated beach landing - all subject to weather and ATC ), followed by a light lunch in the Officer’s Mess. Please respond to Clare on clareferrar@accountantslivery.org by Friday 12 May at 12noon. If there are more than 20 applicants there will be a ballot for places, and a reserve list.
If you wish to stay overnight please see a list of local hotels and B&Bs at thegrangefestival.co.uk/where-to-stay/ We have been offered 20 seats for this performance so please book early to avoid disappointment. Following the continued support of the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity, WCCAEW members and guests are invited to attend a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass on Sunday 9 July at 11.15am, followed by drinks in the Chapter House. The St Paul's Cathedral Choir and the City of London Sinfonia will perform Haydn's Missa in angustiis at this Sung Eucharist. This work which translates as 'Mass for troubled times,' is one of the six masses written near the end of Joseph Haydn's life. Also known as the 'Nelson Mass' it was first performed in 1798. Based on a German tradition, where every movement of a mass is performed with an orchestra, this Orchestral Mass has become a well-established and popular highlight at St Paul’s Cathedral – proving a significant draw for worshippers and visitors alike. The Covid pandemic had a hugely negative impact on St Paul’s Cathedral’s finances. Historically the Cathedral has been heavily reliant on visitor (especially tourist) income to provide 80% of the running costs. They have had to make significant financial savings since 2020 to sustain their operations, including reducing their workforce by 25%, and cutting back on some of their operations including reducing the activity of their famous Choir. St Paul's Cathedral's traditional Orchestral Mass series of four performances is entirely subject to the Cathedral receiving funding. There were no such Masses in 2020 or 2021 and just one in 2022 which was only made possible thanks to the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity grant and our Music Patrons support. What can I expect? Sung Eucharists is the high point of our weekly worship, engaging the senses with sound, colour and movement. This service includes choral and orchestral music, hymn singing and a sermon, During the service, the congregation will be invited to share in the bread and wine....
Following the success of last year's Summer Lunch in the lovely Barber Surgeons' Hall, another lunch is planned for Friday 11 August at Watermen's Hall. Watermen's Hall, in the East of the City, is extremely historic, with lots of interesting features and exhibits, while being surprisingly intimate as well. The atmosphere at this Lunch is deliberately more country garden party than formal City Civic event - dress is jacket and tie for gentlemen, with similarly smart casual for ladies. Attendees will enjoy a relaxed drinks reception and then lunch in the company of the Immediate Past Lord Mayor, the always-charming Vincent Keaveny, who should have been the Company's guest at the Charter Anniversary Banquet last year. This event is extremely guest- and partner-friendly so do book up and bring a party. Tickets: £96 incl VAT Dress: Smart Casual, Jacket & Tie Time: 12:30 Drinks Reception, 1pm Lunch Please book below where possible Alternatively conatct Clare Ferrar on clareferrar@accountantslivery.org

Our annual Livery Company year always starts during the month of October and this autumn, after a most successful year, during which we have been led with considerable style and panache by Master Richard Green, we will enter the mastership of current Master-Elect, Kevin Parry. For the first time in a decade, we have just secured Goldsmiths’ Hall for the next Installation Dinner. It has arguably the City’s finest hall and reception rooms. For dinner, that hall will be lit entirely by candlelight and we anticipate an exquisite collection of gold, gilt and jewellery will be on display in there and downstairs. Our speaker for the evening was due to be Lord Gerry Grimstone, the recent government minister and former Chairman of Barclays, amongst other roles. Sadly, Gerry has been taken ill and so instead, guests will hear from Lord Theodore Agnew. Theodore had a very distinguished business and governmental career, ending up as both a Cabinet Office and a Treasury Minister. His penchant for speaking his mind and actually getting things done, marked him out for business success at an early stage, but perhaps meant he was less likely to last for too long in the upper echelons of politics! Happily for the country, Theodore continues as a doughty campaigner in the House of Lords and much of what he says represents what existing Ministers think, but seldom feel quite able to say. In business, he has built and sold numerous companies, including a slightly unusual one in Australia, and is a past trustee of Policy Exchange, the Westminster think tank. At present, he has a financial interest in the artificial intelligence company, Faculty, Lastly, Theodore is the founder and chairman of a multi-academy trust, which runs fourteen schools in East Anglia. The Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths is...

Our speakers are actress Miriam-Teak Lee and Help Musicians Ambassador Tasmin Little CBE and there will be music from cellist Margarita Balanas, who the charity has supported. Date: Wednesday 22nd November Service: 11am – 12noon Lunch: 12.30pm
This year's Carol Service will be held in the beautiful chapel within Mercers' Hall on Monday 11 December. With music from the Bread Street Chamber Choir of St Paul's Cathedral School, this will be a lovely event for the festive season. Drinks and Canapes will be available following the service in the Ambulatory where there is currently an exhibition entitled Whittington's Legacy on display. If you wish to have a little more time in the exhibition, the Mercers' have kindly agreed to open the Hall from 5pm to allow attendees to view the exhibition before the service begins at 6pm Please see below more information about the exhibition: 2023 marks 600 years since the death of Mercer Richard Whittington, and the start of his remarkable philanthropic legacy. Whittington’s Legacy, an exhibition celebrating Whittington as merchant, Mercer and philanthropist ,will be on display until 15 December 2023. The exhibition commemorates both the anniversary of his death and the establishment of his charity. Richard Whittington (c 1350-1423) was the youngest son of a minor landowner in Gloucestershire and came to London as an apprentice. He made his fortune in the Mercers’ trade and through financing the Crown. Whittington was active in civic life, serving as Lord Mayor four times, and Master of the Mercers’ Company three times. He was known for being charitable in his lifetime, as well as leaving his entire estate to charity. Whittington directed his trustees to entrust his legacy to the care of the Mercers’ Company and his substantial bequest established the Company as a manager of charities. Works from the Company’s own archive and collection will be displayed alongside loans from private collections and institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the London Metropolitan Archives and the Leathersellers’ Company. A key object on display will be the...

In summer 2022, to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the moat at the Tower of London transformed from a barren, flat lawn into a haven for bees, butterflies and other pollinators in the heart of the city. The moat was filled with wildflowers, grown from 20 million seeds. But Superbloom was not just for 2022, it is a permanent installation that continues to bloom. The project has had an amazing outreach, especially to schools across the country. Pollinating London Together (PLT) has arranged a tour which will take about an hour, and will be guided by friends from Historic Royal Palaces who are one of PLT’s Corporate members. After the tour we are arranging a light lunch at the Wine Library, close to Tower Hill Underground station so, if you want, you can continue discussions and/or make new contacts over lunch. We can accommodate a group of 35. The cost of this, including lunch, is £50/head. The tour starts at 11:45 am. You are invited to a Pub Takeover! Following the success of the pub takeover in February, the Financial Services Group of Livery Companies are once again holding a social evening at the historic ‘Hand & Shears’ public house at 1 Middle St, Barbican, London EC1A 7JA situated 100m from the Barbican exit of the Elizabeth Line Farringdon Station. This event is open to any member from the Companies below and is entirely open in format. The pub will be exclusively ours for the night from 6pm till 11pm. The idea of the event is that members from across the broad financial services sector will be able to meet and mingle with no agenda apart from serendipity and no cost apart from what you spend over the bar. And what better thing to do on a likely cold bleak night in the City (and possibly to break your ‘dry January’) but to meet up in one of the City’s oldest pubs with like-minded people? Pop in for an hour or two, or stay for the evening, however please do note that the pub does not provide food, so do plan to eat before or after. There is no need to register but, as a courtesy, and to ensure the pub has the right staffing levels, can you please let Clare Ferrar clareferrar@accountantslivery.org know if you are intending to come along. We look forward to seeing you there! The Financial Services Group of Livery Companies or FSG is made up of the following Liveries and Guilds: Accountants; Actuaries; Arbitrators; Chartered Secretaries; Entrepreneurs; Information Technologists; Insurers; International Bankers; Investment Managers; Management Consultants; Marketors; Solicitors; Tax Advisors; World Traders
Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park was opened to the public 22 years ago as part of the massive redevelopment of the area starting in the 1990s. Many of you may be familiar with the O2 but possibly less familiar with this wider redevelopment. The Conservation Volunteers have managed the park since its inception and have arranged a private viewing for us to learn about the biodiversity created on this former industrial site. They will show us their work including the wetland areas within the park as well as the ecological interest along the tidal Thames riverbank. They also manage an adjacent park which is an important green lung for the neighbourhood. The Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park is a 15-minute walk from the Jubilee Line’s North Greenwich station, a pleasant walk along the Thames Path, walking south with great views across the river and towards the Thames Barrier. We will meet at 17:30 pm for a briefing on the story of the development of the Peninsula, followed by guided tours of the park itself as well as the habitats along the Thames’s tidal river edge. There will be a closing Q&A session. The cost of this visit is £40/head and includes a donation to help the local community fund project in the park. Please book via the link below: https://buytickets.at/pollinatinglondontogether/1227416 After the park visit, we are planning a two-course meal at a local pub. Details on this, and booking will be separate to the park visit. Details to be confirmed.
Since 1973, Orchestral Masses had been a well-established annual feature of choral worship at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Masses stopped during the lockdown and the lack of tourist income meant the Cathedral was not in a position to reintroduce them immediately. The Charity Trustees have made a donation to St Paul’s for a couple of years now, which has enabled them to introduce Orchestral Masses to their regular programme again. This year, members and guests are invited to attend the Mozart's Coronation Mass sung by The St Paul's Cathedral Choir and accompanied by the City of London Sinfonia, held under the Dome of St Paul’s, as part of the Sunday morning Eucharist, on Sunday 30th June at 11:15am. There is no charge although contributions to St Paul’s would be welcome. After the Mass the team at St Paul’s have invited representatives from the Company to join them for pre-lunchtime drinks in the Chapter House, so that they may express their gratitude for the Charity’s support. You are welcome to join us for lunch at Cote afterwards – places for lunch are limited to 20.

This year's Banquet will be held at Mansion House on Tuesday, 23rd July. The occasion is always the highpoint of our Livery's year, and this occasion will be no exception. As many Members will know, until the mid-18th century, Lord Mayors used their own houses or livery halls for their work as head of the City's governmental, judicial and civic functions. The idea of creating a permanent residence came after the Great Fire of 1666 to provide a house for Lord Mayors who did not have their own livery hall. The first stone was laid in 1739, and the first Lord Mayor to take up residence was Sir Crispin Gascoigne. The House was completed in 1758. Imposingly Palladian in style, it is faced by a grand temple portico at the front approached by flights of steps each side. The entertaining rooms were built on the first and second floors. The first floor had a roofless courtyard (later covered to form the Salon, the entertainment space) and the great Egyptian Hall. The second floor has a ballroom and private apartments of the Lord Mayor and family. After we have dined, Members and their guests will hear from The Chairman of the Bank of England, David Roberts. David's career began at Barclays, where he worked for over 20 years, rising to sit on the main board. He has also been Vice-Chair of NHS England, Chairman of Nationwide, and Deputy Chairman of Lloyds Banking Group. Currently however, his role as Chairman of our nation's central bank keeps him extremely busy and he will no doubt be keen to explain what the Bank of England is currently doing and why - rather brave, really, to a room full of chartered accountants! Tickets: £169 Time: 6.45pm - Drinks, 7.15pm - Call for Dinner, 10.30pm - Carriages...
