“Glorious First of June” Lunch

Our Master is a naval man and thus the great British sea victory on this day in 1794 against the nascent fleet of the new French revolutionary republic is imprinted firmly on his mind. He is taking this key date as an ideal excuse to lead us to a convivial lunch at the world-famous Leander Rowing Club, on the banks of the Thames, hard by Henley Bridge. The Club has a splendid, light-filled dining room overlooking the river, with its own private car park opposite the front gate, and the whole occasion promises to be great fun. Our principal guest for the day will be Sheriff Chris Hayward, who will be joining us with his wife, Alex, and will be talking to us about how the Corporation is supporting the City Commercial as it reopens, and where the pinch points have been during the pandemic. Then, after lunch, we can all enjoy a gentle stroll along the towpath by the banks of that beautiful stretch of river. Guests are most welcome and dress is jacket and tie for gentlemen (no jeans) and the equivalent for Ladies. The Club opens for us at 12.30pm and we dine at 1pm.

Mayoral Election Day Lunch

After the historic ceremonial of the Mayoral Election during the morning, the Master always leads a party of Company Members and their guests up to the splendid Aldermen's Dining Room at the top of Guildhall for a private Drinks Reception and Lunch. There is a roof terrace up there, where we enjoy our drinks before the meal and the cooks then always provide a delicious Lunch for us in the dining room.

Past Masters’ and Past Consorts’ Meetings and Lunch

This is the occasion at which the Master provides a report to their predecessors, who give private guidance on issues of the day. The Masters' Consort does much the same with those who have gone before, and then everyone meets up for a Lunch. Those currently in the chair find the process and the discrete feedback and advice they receive to be very valuable, and those who attend greatly enjoy the day and contributing to the ongoing development of their Livery Company. This year, the venue is the lovely Innholders' Hall, down near the river at the foot of Dowgate Hill. Dress is smart business attire and the ticket price is calculated in arrears and billed accordingly.

United Guilds Service

SORRY: This event sold out in just four days! At a meeting of the City’s Livery Companies in 1943, it was decided to hold a Service in St Paul’s Cathedral, to lift the spirits of the City after the Blitz, which had only recently ended, having wrought such devastation on the capital in particular. This has now become an annual event, held in the presence of the Bishop of London, the Lord Mayor, Sheriffs and Aldermen, and is one of the few occasions where the Liveries and Guilds all worship together. Admission is by ticket only. We always take a party to the service, usually using our full allocation of places. The service starts at 11.30am (though we have to be seated before then) and after it ends at about 12.30pm, we and lots of other Liveries and Guilds walk the short distance to the lovely Plaisterers’ Hall for a drinks reception followed by what is always a pretty lively, three-course Lunch. We are usually allocated 23 places, but I haven’t been told this year’s number. Members can bring one guest, and bookings will be honoured on a first-come-first-served basis. The UGS is naturally free (The Company makes a donation centrally, and there is the usual collection during the service.), and places at the lunch afterwards cost £89 each, inc Vat. SORRY: This event sold out in just four days!

Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch

This annual City institution has grown over the years until it is now quite the largest and swankiest Curry Lunch one is every likely to attend, and very much a sight to be seen. Tickets cost £100 and for that we get a drinks reception in the Old Library at Guildhall and then move through into the Great Hall, where teams of chefs man a series of serveries, with a mouth-watering series of curries laid out on them, along with the usual accompaniments. We always take a party, so book your place(s) here and then we can all coordinate over timings, as the event itself runs from Noon to 3pm, with various time slots on offer.

Little Yang Sing Lunch in Manchester

You may recall that two years ago Master Lindsay was going to celebrate her northern roots with a lunch at the Yang Sing restaurant in Manchester. The pandemic intervened and the event was postponed. We now have a new date and Hilary and current Master Estlin will be delighted if you can join them both on Friday 22nd April at the Little Yang Sing Restaurant (the Yang Sing is being refurbished), in Manchester's celebrated Chinatown. ‘The restaurant offers the best traditional Cantonese cuisine in the North West’ says one of the many glowing reviews. Tickets will be £69 each for a Chinese Banquet with drinks before, during and after the lunch. The venue is available to us from 12:30pm to 4:00pm

Shrieval Election and Lunch at Guildhall

Twice a year, the City of London Corporation’s Common Hall is transformed from a standard local authority meeting on civic issues, into a day of great ceremony. Each autumn Liverymen elect the next year’s Lord Mayor and every summer, it’s the turn of the two Sheriffs. The Shrieval election ceremony starts at noon (There is no admission after 11.45am.) and ends around 12.30-12.45pm. Dress is lounge suit for men and smart day wear for ladies. After Common Hall, most Liveries go home, but our Master always hosts a private Reception and Lunch. We go up to Guildhall’s roof terrace on the fourth floor for the Reception and then into the Aldermen’s Dining Room for lunch. The day is very much one for partners and guests too. This year, as an extra, it has been possible to secure some places at the annual Armed Forces Flag Raising in Guildhall Yard. For those who would like to stay on to see it, this takes place at 3.15pm, lasts about 30 minutes, and is rather a nice sign of respect for our military from the City. Common Hall and the Flag Raising are free, and this year the Lunch costs £75. The Dining Room only holds 28 guests, so places will have to be allocated on as first-come-first-served basis.

Festival of St. Cecilia Service and Lunch

Join together at Westminster Abbey to celebrate the value of music. The Festival of St. Cecilia has been the flagship event in Help Musicians’ calendar since 1946. It is a key moment for us to come together to celebrate what music brings to all of us, and to mark the contribution that musicians make to our lives. This year, the combined choirs of Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral and St Paul’s Cathedral will unite to perform under the direction of James O’Donnell, the Abbey’s Organist and Master of Choristers. The service will premiere a specially created anthem by composer, Nico Muhly, and we are privileged to welcome Help Musicians Ambassador Lesley Garrett CBE and Musicians Company Master Jeff Kelly for spoken contributions. The service will also include music from clarinettist Josh Pyman, who the charity has supported. The service will be held at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 23 November 2022, starting at 11am, and will be followed by an optional lunch. More details of how to book coming soon.  

Past Masters’ and Consorts’ Meeting and Lunch

Please note this event is invite only An annual event with a meeting of the current Master, Wardens and the Past Masters, a meeting of their Consorts, all followed by lunch. This year's event takes place in the Guildhall Club with lunch being held in the lovely, wood-panelled Private Members' Dining Room. Our SMiLO has organised a rare flying visit with 47 Squadron to mark the long association between the Company and our affiliated unit. As the Squadron is to be disbanded in 30 June 2023, this is not only a rare flying opportunity, but the last one. The visit will include welcome coffee, flight briefing, a flight (probably to the Severn estuary and perhaps a simulated beach landing - all subject to weather and ATC ), followed by a light lunch in the Officer’s Mess. After Common Hall, many Liveries go home, but the Master Chartered Accountant hosts a private Reception and Lunch in the Aldermen's Dining Room. We go up to Guildhall’s roof terrace on the fourth floor for the Reception and then into the Dining Room for lunch. Summer Lunch

Following the success of last year's Summer Lunch in the lovely Barber Surgeons' Hall, another lunch is planned for Friday 11 August at Watermen's Hall. Watermen's Hall, in the East of the City, is extremely historic, with lots of interesting features and exhibits, while being surprisingly intimate as well. The atmosphere at this Lunch is deliberately more country garden party than formal City Civic event - dress is jacket and tie for gentlemen, with similarly smart casual for ladies. Attendees will enjoy a relaxed drinks reception and then lunch in the company of the Immediate Past Lord Mayor, the always-charming Vincent Keaveny, who should have been the Company's guest at the Charter Anniversary Banquet last year.
