Tour of the Triforium of St Paul’s

St Paul's Cathedral St Paul's Churchyard, London, United Kingdom

Most Livery Members, after a while, would describe themselves as fairly familiar with our great Cathedral. After all, it is effectively the City Civic's "parish church" (For a start, there is nothing else locally, which is big enough to fit us all in!) and there are services and concerts there, throughout the year. However, what we routinely see, down at floor level, is by no means all that Wren's architectural triumph has to offer, and so this June a party of up to 20 of us will be taken on a private tour of those parts of the Cathedral which the public seldom sees. Our guide will take us up to the Triforium and into the Library and the Trophy Room. We will also see the Great Model, which played such a crucial role in the development of the building's design and engineering during its construction. Then as a finale, we will enjoy the spectacular view down from the top of the iconic Geometric Staircase and another down the nave, from above the Great West Doors. The tour will start at 2.30pm and last about an hour, and for those feeling peckish, the Master will lead a party to a nearby restaurant for a spot of lunch beforehand. Tickets for the tour cost £39 each. Dress will be "smart casual", and the lunch will be publicised and billed separately, for those who wish to attend.

United Guilds’ Service 2025 and Lunch

St Paul's Cathedral St Paul's Churchyard, London, United Kingdom

The United Guilds' Service (UGS) was first held in February 1943 as a coordinated response to the challenges faced by the City of London following the Blitz of 1940-41. It was also a reminder of the religious origins of the Guilds. The first service was held on Lady Day – 25th March 1943 - the first day of the year by the old calendar. This annual service held at St Paul's Cathedral is one of the few occasions in the Livery calendar at which all the Livery Companies and Guilds of the City can gather together as a whole – it is always a spectacular occasion, and one not to be missed if you haven’t attended before. Lunch following the United Guilds' Service - Stationers' Hall Drinks will be served from 12.30 pm in the Court Room, followed by lunch in the Hall and Stock Room at 1.00 pm. Lunch will consist of three courses with red and white wine; a glass of port will also be served. 10.45am - all ticket holders must be seated 11.15am - service starts 12.15pm - service finishes 12.30pm - drinks 1pm - lunch Tickets: Access to the service is free of charge, but please reserve your place below as each Company is allocated a limited number of tickets. This year’s service will feature the premiere of a specially created anthem by Heloise Werner, who has been supported by Help Musicians, and we are thrilled to present a highly anticipated performance by pianist and Help Musicians Ambassadors, Isata Kanneh-Mason. St Paul’s Orchestral Mass

St Paul's Cathedral St Paul's Churchyard, London, United Kingdom

Following the continued support of the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity, WCCAEW members and guests are invited to attend a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass on Sunday 9 July at 11.15am, followed by drinks in the Chapter House. The St Paul's Cathedral Choir and the City of London Sinfonia will perform Haydn's Missa in angustiis at this Sung Eucharist.  This work which translates as 'Mass for troubled times,' is one of the six masses written near the end of Joseph Haydn's life.  Also known as the 'Nelson Mass' it was first performed in 1798. Based on a German tradition, where every movement of a mass is performed with an orchestra, this Orchestral Mass has become a well-established and popular highlight at St Paul’s Cathedral – proving a significant draw for worshippers and visitors alike. The Covid pandemic had a hugely negative impact on St Paul’s Cathedral’s finances. Historically the Cathedral has been heavily reliant on visitor (especially tourist) income to provide 80% of the running costs. They have had to make significant financial savings since 2020 to sustain their operations, including reducing their workforce by 25%, and cutting back on some of their operations including reducing the activity of their famous Choir. St Paul's Cathedral's traditional Orchestral Mass series of four performances is entirely subject to the Cathedral receiving funding. There were no such Masses in 2020 or 2021 and just one in 2022 which was only made possible thanks to the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity grant and our Music Patrons support. What can I expect? Sung Eucharists is the high point of our weekly worship, engaging the senses with sound, colour and movement. This service includes choral and orchestral music, hymn singing and a sermon, During the service, the congregation will be invited to share in the bread and wine....

United Guilds Service

St Paul's Cathedral St Paul's Churchyard, London, United Kingdom

SORRY: This event sold out in just four days! At a meeting of the City’s Livery Companies in 1943, it was decided to hold a Service in St Paul’s Cathedral, to lift the spirits of the City after the Blitz, which had only recently ended, having wrought such devastation on the capital in particular. This has now become an annual event, held in the presence of the Bishop of London, the Lord Mayor, Sheriffs and Aldermen, and is one of the few occasions where the Liveries and Guilds all worship together. Admission is by ticket only. We always take a party to the service, usually using our full allocation of places. The service starts at 11.30am (though we have to be seated before then) and after it ends at about 12.30pm, we and lots of other Liveries and Guilds walk the short distance to the lovely Plaisterers’ Hall for a drinks reception followed by what is always a pretty lively, three-course Lunch. We are usually allocated 23 places, but I haven’t been told this year’s number. Members can bring one guest, and bookings will be honoured on a first-come-first-served basis. The UGS is naturally free (The Company makes a donation centrally, and there is the usual collection during the service.), and places at the lunch afterwards cost £89 each, inc Vat. SORRY: This event sold out in just four days!
