Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch – Sold Out

Guildhall Gresham Street, London, United Kingdom

Originally described by some wags as "The City of London's hottest annual event", this now enormous annual charity fundraiser began back in 2008 on a very small scale. Hosted by the Lord Mayor, over the years it has grown and grown, until today it takes over the whole of Guildhall and raises going on half a million pounds annually. At its core, the Lunch demonstrates the City’s support for members of His Majesty’s Armed Forces and veterans, through the three National Service Charities: The Army Benevolent Fund, The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund. It does this via a huge curry lunch, held in a packed Great Hall, plus a silent auction for some pretty splendid lots, held in the Old Library. The Master is going to the 2pm sitting and invites up to nine members and their guests to join him. As well as being delicious, the whole occasion is very much "A sight to see" - certainly, you won't be able to watch over 300 people, all guzzling curry in shifts, anywhere else! Tickets cost £110 and were allocated on a "first-come-first-served basis".

Tour of the Roman Amphitheatre under Guildhall and the Art Gallery

Guildhall Gresham Street, London, United Kingdom

Very few people know that underneath Guildhall is a large Roman amphitheatre, which occupied most of what is now the site of Guildhall Yard and the Great Hall. This was one of the centre-pieces of Roman Londinium, and the venue for countless gladiatorial contests, pageants and other displays. Some 2,000 years after they were built, few such amphitheatres survive in the UK and this is the only one which is so intact. It is also the only one to which the public can gain access - albeit by dint of much begging! We have been granted that privilege, but only for a maximum of 15 people, because the fabric of the arena has to be preserved from the tread of countless feet. Our guide is also going to give us a private tour of the Art Gallery, which we sometimes pass through on our way to big City Civic events - the cloakroom and loos are in the basement! It has a HUGE and ever-growing collection, including one of the original Magna Cartas. So hurry and book the very limited number of places (Capacity means Members can bring just one guest each.) for a ninety-minute visit, meeting our guide at Guildhall's West Wing entrance at 6pm. We will start with a tour of the Gallery and then descend underground and walk out onto the sand of the arena, slipping back in history over two millennia, to stand where countless battles were fought and some of our City's historic foundations were cast. After the tour, you are free to head home, or you can join the Master for supper at The Trading House, a few yards away in Gresham Street, where everyone can choose what they wish to eat and then squabble over the bill!

Shrieval Election and Lunch at Guildhall

Guildhall Gresham Street, London, United Kingdom

Twice a year, the City of London Corporation’s Common Hall is transformed from a standard local authority meeting on civic issues, into a day of great ceremony. Each autumn Liverymen elect the next year’s Lord Mayor and every summer, it’s the turn of the two Sheriffs. The Shrieval election ceremony starts at noon (There is no admission after 11.45am.) and ends around 12.30-12.45pm. Dress is lounge suit for men and smart day wear for ladies. After Common Hall, most Liveries go home, but our Master always hosts a private Reception and Lunch. We go up to Guildhall’s roof terrace on the fourth floor for the Reception and then into the Aldermen’s Dining Room for lunch. The day is very much one for partners and guests too. This year, as an extra, it has been possible to secure some places at the annual Armed Forces Flag Raising in Guildhall Yard. For those who would like to stay on to see it, this takes place at 3.15pm, lasts about 30 minutes, and is rather a nice sign of respect for our military from the City. Common Hall and the Flag Raising are free, and this year the Lunch costs £75. The Dining Room only holds 28 guests, so places will have to be allocated on as first-come-first-served basis.

Court Only Dinner

Guildhall Gresham Street, London, United Kingdom

This year the Master is delighted to be holding this always-enjoyable event in the lovely Members’ Private Dining Room, up on the third floor of Guildhall. This panelled room boasts a splendid silver collection, some fascinating documents on the walls and fine views across Guildhall Yard to the Art Gallery opposite. As you know, the Dinner is traditionally held straight after our June Court Meeting, begins with a drinks reception, and is an opportunity for our Livery’s key leadership group to dine together, discuss the issues of the day and enjoy each other’s company. Dress is Livery Uniform/Black Tie and the equivalent for ladies. By custom, badges of office are not worn.  Pour Mémoire cards will also not be sent out this year, as part of the Company’s support for decarbonisation. Tickets are £95 each and will be invoiced after booking. Please book in by noon on Friday 10th June. Equally, it would be helpful if you would let me know if you cannot come. (Access on the night will be via the West Wing entrance, which is on the corner of Gresham Street and Aldermanbury, where the staff will show you up to the Reception.)
