Tour of Chartered Accountants’ Hall with the ICAEW President

Tour One Moorgate Place, also known as Chartered Accountants' Hall, with guide Malcolm Bacchus, a WCCAEW Court Assistant, and longstanding Livery Company member. Malcolm became ICAEW President in June of this year, and it is probably fair to say that few people know more about the history of the building than he does. This will be a very special evening. One Moorgate Place is a grade II listed building which opened in 1893. It has a range of diverse spaces that can accommodate a number of event requirements. Opulent rooms such as the Main Reception Room and Members’ Room remain true to the building’s historical and cultural heritage, while the Great Hall and range of contemporary and modern rooms are perfect for conferences and business meetings. As you venture through One Moorgate Place, you will appreciate the creative engineering work of the original architectural style and building design.  With extensions and updates taking place throughout its history, there is a strong art-deco feel in some areas which juxtaposes the original features. Following the tour you are invited down for drinks in the the OMP Club in the basement of the building. You are also welcome to join the group at an optional supper nearby. Sheepdrive 2024

HOSTED BY THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF WOOLMEN, ONE SPECIAL DAY – TWO UNIQUE EVENTS, ENSURING THAT EVERYONE CAN ENJOY THE ATMOSPHERE AND SPIRIT OF THIS WONDERFUL OCCASION. A long-established charity event, celebrating a Freeman’s ancient “right” to bring sheep to market over the Thames, toll free; all in aid of raising funds for The Woolmen Charity and The Lord Mayor’s Appeal. This year’s Sheep Drive will take place on Southwark Bridge. Access is restricted to registered and pre-booked Freemen of the City of London and their guests, to enable the remainder of the bridge to be open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Installation Dinner 2024

It’s decades since we last dined at Merchant Taylors’ Hall, which is very much one of “The Big Four” (We’ve been to all of Drapers, Goldsmiths, and Fishmongers in the past two years.). Hidden away behind anonymous facade, just east of the Bank of England, lies a collection of grand reception rooms and a lovely courtyard garden. The Great Hall itself is very splendid and the only one in London with an organ. As well as starting the new Livery year in style, and Installing Jonathan Grosvenor as Master, we have several things to celebrate!  - Firstly, our splendid Beadle has served us for ten years, and we all wish to mark this milestone with a suitable presentation. - Secondly, there is our Sword of Honour to present to the best contributor to our fine 47 Squadron Association. - Lastly, but by no means least, we have a number of presentations to recent Past Masters. The Almoner will give a short update on the grants the Trustees have been making on our behalf, plus the first of our small appeals, made on big dinner nights this coming year, at which a Member will ask us to support a specific fundraiser of limited size, to which they are personally committed. As for entertainment, the meal, the fellowship and the lovely surroundings apart, we will take fully advantage of the organ, with a short concert after dinner. The Master-elect has persuaded our own Miles Hedges, who is a fine singer, to join up with leading Australian soprano, Samantha Hargreaves, and fine baritone, David Bole (a former state trumpeter, no less!) and the well-known City Minstrel, Julian Cable on the organ, to light up the Hall with a range of songs, the last of which should blow the roof off (Just don’t tell...

Tour of the Roman Amphitheatre under Guildhall and the Art Gallery

Very few people know that underneath Guildhall is a large Roman amphitheatre, which occupied most of what is now the site of Guildhall Yard and the Great Hall. This was one of the centre-pieces of Roman Londinium, and the venue for countless gladiatorial contests, pageants and other displays. Some 2,000 years after they were built, few such amphitheatres survive in the UK and this is the only one which is so intact. It is also the only one to which the public can gain access - albeit by dint of much begging! We have been granted that privilege, but only for a maximum of 15 people, because the fabric of the arena has to be preserved from the tread of countless feet. Our guide is also going to give us a private tour of the Art Gallery, which we sometimes pass through on our way to big City Civic events - the cloakroom and loos are in the basement! It has a HUGE and ever-growing collection, including one of the original Magna Cartas. So hurry and book the very limited number of places (Capacity means Members can bring just one guest each.) for a ninety-minute visit, meeting our guide at Guildhall's West Wing entrance at 6pm. We will start with a tour of the Gallery and then descend underground and walk out onto the sand of the arena, slipping back in history over two millennia, to stand where countless battles were fought and some of our City's historic foundations were cast. After the tour, you are free to head home, or you can join the Master for supper at The Trading House, a few yards away in Gresham Street, where everyone can choose what they wish to eat and then squabble over the bill!

THE CURRENT ECONOMIC OUTLOOK - The view from the Bank of England Speaker Rob Elder – Bank of England Agent Bank of England Agents are shadowy figures who each "farms their patch", talking constantly and discretely to businesses large and small, to see how the economy is doing from their perspective, what the pinch points are and also the threats and opportunities. The Agents then convert all this raw information into considered intelligence, which is fed back into the Bank's assessment process, for a whole range of policy decisions. Agents do not talk publicly about their work, but we have friends in low places, and so are delighted to welcome Rob Elder back to CAH once again, to speak to a small number of us, strictly under the Chatham House Rule, to give the Bank of England’s view on the economic year ahead. We are in a period of turmoil and fluctuation, with elections in both the UK and USA, coupled with the ongoing crises in the Middle East and the Ukraine war, which are all resulting in major trends and changes across Europe. There is thus much to hear about from the Bank of England, and shrewd questions to be asked of Bob. Court and Trustees’ Consorts Dinner

This annual event is open to Members and former Members of Court and to the Trustees of our Charity, plus their Consorts. The evening provides an opportunity for everyone to socialise together and most importantly, to discuss issues surrounding our Company's and Charity's governance, fundraising and grant making. The speaker is usually someone who can add to such discussions. This year, the Dinner is being held at the Army and Navy Club at the western end of Pall Mall, and our guest speaker will be the CO of our newest military affiliate. After the meal, the Colonel will address us on the welfare challenges that he and his SLT face in relation to their soldiers, many of whom are quite young. Dress for the evening is black tie or livery uniform, and invitations will go out shortly to those eligible to attend. Places are priced up and invoiced after the event, once all the costs are known.

Help Musicians’ Festival of St Cecilia 2024 and Lunch

Help Musicians’ annual celebration of music The Festival of St. Cecilia has been the flagship event in Help Musicians’ calendar since 1946. Private tour of the Tower of London and Ceremony of the Keys

When Duke William of Normandy won the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and marched north to London, he struck a deal with the Masters of the then Guilds to protect the City in return for their fealty. The first evidence of that protection was King William I's construction and manning of what became known as the White Tower, to guard London from Viking raiding parties coming up the Thames. Today, that Tower stands in the middle of the much larger Royal fortress and palace; the Tower of London. Every night, the Tower is locked up and made secure in what has become known as the Ceremony of the Keys. That ceremony is open to small parties to watch, by kind permission of the Governor of the Tower. We have been granted this privilege, and also a private tour of the Tower itself, led by a Yeoman Warder. For security reasons, our party is limited to 50 people and we will all need to be at the main entrance to the Tower on its west side by 7.15pm, so the Warders and soldiers can check the attendance list prior to our admission. Once inside, a Yeoman Warder will lead us on a private tour of the silent fortress for about an hour, answering our questions along the way, before taking us the "The Keys", the Warders' private pub. There, we can have a drink and join in a raffle for various Tower-related souvenirs. For historical reasons to do with transactions on military bases and inside Royal palaces (The Tower is both.), both the bar and the raffle operate on a cash-only basis, so remember to bring some notes with you. Carol Service at the Chapel Royal inside the Tower of London and Supper at Watermen’s Hall

As well as very kindly granting the Company a private tour of the Tower on 20th November, and ringside seats at that evening's Ceremony of the Keys, the Governor has also given us permission to hold this year's Carol Service in their Chapel Royal. The Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula stands in the north-east corner of the fortress and dates from the reign of King Henry VIII, but it is merely the latest church on the site, which has been holy ground since the Dark Ages. For those who wish to take a general tour beforehand and see the Crown Jewels, it has been agreed that we can buy tickets for entry between 3pm and 4pm, at a cost of £32 each. Then, once the Tower closes, rather than being asked to wait outside for the service, we are going to be allowed to have a drink in the Yeoman Warders' private pub, The Keys, until 6pm. (Note: this is a cash-only bar.) Members and their guests who do not wish to visit the Tower of London before the Carol Service need to come to the main entrance on the western side of the fortress at 6pm.   At 6pm, everyone will led up to the Chapel Royal and given a talk on its history and present day role. The service itself will begin at 6.30pm and should last about an hour. Visit to Gunmakers’ Hall and Testing Labs, plus Christmas Lunch back at CAH

The general public has no idea that behind the quiet façade of Gunmakers' Hall, just north-east of the City, hies the nation’s secret testing labs for all illegal and counterfeit firearms, which are seized in the UK. Unsurprisingly, this fascinating facility is never open to them, but the Gunmakers' Company, which owns and manages it on behalf of the nation, is discretely allowing up to ten of us to tour it, on condition nothing is said thereafter, and no photos are taken. We will meet outside their Hall at 10.45am, ready to go through security, at 11am. The tour itself will include not only the labs and a briefing from one of the staff, but also, oddly, a visit to see their pet snail, which is the world's largest - goodness knows how it ended up living (and apparently thriving!) at Gunmakers! Once the tour is over, we will all jump into a couple of cabs and go to our Hall, where the staff have laid on a full Christmas Lunch for us, down in the Club, with all the trimmings. For security reasons, and because the labs are a working environment in which space is limited, our numbers for this event are restricted to just 10, so Members are asked not to bring more than one guest.

United Guilds’ Service 2025

The United Guilds' Service (UGS) was first held in February 1943 as a coordinated response to the challenges faced by the City of London following the Blitz of 1940-41. It was also a reminder of the religious origins of the Guilds. The first service to be conducted was held on Lady Day – 25th March 1943 - the first day of the year by the old calendar. This annual service is held at St Pauls Cathedral is one of the few occasions in the Livery calendar at which all the Livery Companies and Guilds of the City can gather together as a whole – it is always a spectacular occasion, and one not to be missed if you haven’t attended before.
