DESCRIPTION:The Festival of St. Cecilia has been the flagship event in Help Musicians’ calendar since 1946. It is a key moment for us to come together to celebrate what music brings to all of us\, and to mark the contribution that musicians make to our lives. \nThis year’s service will see the combined choirs of Westminster Cathedral\, St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey unite to perform under the direction of Simon Johnson\, the Cathedral’s Master of Music. \nThe service will also premiere a specially created anthem by composer\, Joseph Phibbs; commissioned by the Vaughan Williams Foundation. DESCRIPTION:This year’s Carol Service will be held in the beautiful chapel within Mercers’ Hall on Monday 11 December. \nWith music from the Bread Street Chamber Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral School\, this will be a lovely event for the festive season. \nDrinks and Canapes will be available following the service in the Ambulatory where there is currently an exhibition entitled Whittington’s Legacy on display. \nIf you wish to have a little more time in the exhibition\, the Mercers’ have kindly agreed to open the Hall from 5pm to allow attendees to view the exhibition before the service begins at 6pm \n\nPlease see below more information about the exhibition: \n2023 marks 600 years since the death of Mercer Richard Whittington\, and the start of his remarkable philanthropic legacy. Whittington’s Legacy\, an exhibition celebrating Whittington as merchant\, Mercer and philanthropist \,will be on display until 15 December 2023. The exhibition commemorates both the anniversary of his death and the establishment of his charity. \nRichard Whittington (c 1350-1423) was the youngest son of a minor landowner in Gloucestershire and came to London as an apprentice. He made his fortune in the Mercers’ trade and through financing the Crown. Whittington was active in civic life\, serving as Lord Mayor four times\, and Master of the Mercers’ Company three times. He was known for being charitable in his lifetime\, as well as leaving his entire estate to charity. Whittington directed his trustees to entrust his legacy to the care of the Mercers’ Company and his substantial bequest established the Company as a manager of charities. \nWorks from the Company’s own archive and collection will be displayed alongside loans from private collections and institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum\, the London Metropolitan Archives and the Leathersellers’ Company. A key object on display will be the surviving wardrobe accounts from the reign of Richard II\, on loan from the National Archives\, in which Whittington’s name appears on multiple occasions\, selling fine fabrics to the king. \nThe exhibition also explores Whittington’s influence on the philanthropy of subsequent Mercer benefactors\, concentrating on the three centuries following Whittington’s death\, up to 1750. During this period the Company was entrusted with many of the benefactions that form the core of its charitable work today. The displays will consider philanthropy in areas such as the church\, education\, almshouses\, and helping the poor and prisoners\, all of which have their roots in Whittington’s charitable activities and legacy. The exhibition will feature the Company’s recent acquisition of Corona Charitatis\, a sermon preached on the death of Mercer Richard Fishborne and important loans include a magnificent portrait of John Bancks\, on loan from Chequers Trust\, and a full length portrait of Sir Baptist Hicks from the collection of the Middlesex Guildhall Art Trust\, usually on display at the Supreme Court. \nWhittington’s Legacy will highlight information about the Charity of Sir Richard Whittington today\, which since 2018 has awarded 303 grants to 245 organisations totalling £20.7 million. DESCRIPTION:The United Guilds’ Service (UGS) was first held in February 1943 as a coordinated response to the challenges faced by the City of London following the Blitz of 1940-41. \nIt was also a reminder of the religious origins of the Guilds. The first service to be conducted was held on Lady Day – 25th March 1943 – the first day of the year by the old calendar. \nThis annual service is held at St Pauls Cathedral is one of the few occasions in the Livery calendar at which all the Livery Companies and Guilds of the City can gather together as a whole – it is always a spectacular occasion\, and one not to be missed if you haven’t attended before. \nWe have a small number of seats available for the service\, and for lunch at Stationers’ Hall after the service (you may attend the service without attending the lunch). (Guests of those who attend will be entertained outside while CH is going on.) \nThe Drapers’ Livery Hall is one of the finest grand rooms anywhere in London. The vast ceiling is adorned with scenes from Shakespeare’s plays ‘The Tempest’ and ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and around the walls is displayed some splendid silver. Marble-columned\, galleried\, gilded and hung with royal portraits\, this is where members of the Royal Family and other heads of state have dined. No surprise then\, that it regularly appears on television as Buckingham Palace. \nThe Master’s principal speaker for the evening is Baroness Ruth Davidson PC\, who was a highly energetic and successful leader of the Conservatives in Scotland for many years and now speaks with equal eloquence in the Lords. The Golf Croquet World Championships were held at this venue twice in recent years. Lunch will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:In summer 2022\, to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II\, the moat at the Tower of London transformed from a barren\, flat lawn into a haven for bees\, butterflies and other pollinators in the heart of the city. The moat was filled with wildflowers\, grown from 20 million seeds. But Superbloom was not just for 2022\, it is a permanent installation that continues to bloom. The project has had an amazing outreach\, especially to schools across the country. \nPollinating London Together (PLT) has arranged a tour which will take about an hour\, and will be guided by friends from Historic Royal Palaces who are one of PLT’s Corporate members. \nAfter the tour we are arranging a light lunch at the Wine Library\, close to Tower Hill Underground station so\, if you want\, you can continue discussions and/or make new contacts over lunch. \nWe can accommodate a group of 35. Click here for more history and information. \nEach autumn Liverymen elect the next year’s Lord Mayor and every summer\, it’s the turn of the two Sheriffs. \nAfter Common Hall\, many Liveries go home\, but the Master Chartered Accountant hosts a private Reception and Lunch in the Aldermen’s Dining Room. \nWe go up to Guildhall’s roof terrace on the fourth floor for the Reception and then into the Dining Room for lunch. \nPartners and guests are very welcome and will be able to have coffee and explore the Guildhall Gallery while Liverymen are attending the Election Ceremony. \n\n11.30am – Coffee \n11.45am – All attending the Election Ceremony must be seated \n12noon – Shrieval Election Ceremony \n12.45pm – Drinks in the Aldermen’s Dining Room \n1.30pm – Lunch in the Aldermen’s Dining Room \n\nDress: lounge suit or smart day wear \nTickets: £89

DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a Pub Takeover!\nFollowing the success of the pub takeover in February\, the Financial Services Group of Livery Companies are once again holding a social evening at the historic ‘Hand & Shears’ public house at 1 Middle St\, Barbican\, London EC1A 7JA situated 100m from the Barbican exit of the Elizabeth Line Farringdon Station. \nThis event is open to any member from the Companies below and is entirely open in format. The pub will be exclusively ours for the night from 6pm till 11pm. The idea of the event is that members from across the broad financial services sector will be able to meet and mingle with no agenda apart from serendipity and no cost apart from what you spend over the bar. And what better thing to do on a likely cold bleak night in the City (and possibly to break your ‘dry January’) but to meet up in one of the City’s oldest pubs with like-minded people? SUMMARY:Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park Visit
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park was opened to the public 22 years ago as part of the massive redevelopment of the area starting in the 1990s. Many of you may be familiar with the O2 but possibly less familiar with this wider redevelopment. \nThe Conservation Volunteers have managed the park since its inception and have arranged a private viewing for us to learn about the biodiversity created on this former industrial site.\nThey will show us their work including the wetland areas within the park as well as the ecological interest along the tidal Thames riverbank. They also manage an adjacent park which is an important green lung for the neighbourhood. \nThe Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park is a 15-minute walk from the Jubilee Line’s North Greenwich station\, a pleasant walk along the Thames Path\, walking south with great views across the river and towards the Thames Barrier. \nWe will meet at 17:30 pm for a briefing on the story of the development of the Peninsula\, followed by guided tours of the park itself as well as the habitats along the Thames’s tidal river edge.
