SUMMARY:OMP Club Night - Spanish Cheese and Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Those cheese aficianados in our ranks will remember with fondness the discovery that September’s Spanish Cheese & Wine tasting actually turned out to be French! Still\, two bottles of excellent French wine per person ensured an uproarious evening\, which was further enhanced by the six delicious cheeses a-la-Macron. \nAs a follow-up\, this time the Company WILL enjoy its hoped-for Spanish-themed evening\, supplied as usual by our very nice cheesemonger up in York\, Love Cheese. The irrepressible Mollie will once again guide us through the Spanish Red and the White\, plus the six Spanish cheeses\, and as Spain is perhaps not the first country we all think of when considering cheese (as everyone frequently does!) it is sure to be an interesting\, as well as a nourishing evening. \nThe cost of attendance is £50 per person and you can book in on here or email the Clerk. He will then send out the Zoom login details to those attending\, and the cold-pack of Spanish cheese and wine will then be delivered a day or two before the event.

SUMMARY:"Glorious First of June" Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Our Master is a naval man and thus the great British sea victory on this day in 1794 against the nascent fleet of the new French revolutionary republic is imprinted firmly on his mind. He is taking this key date as an ideal excuse to lead us to a convivial lunch at the world-famous Leander Rowing Club\, on the banks of the Thames\, hard by Henley Bridge. \nThe Club has a splendid\, light-filled dining room overlooking the river\, with its own private car park opposite the front gate\, and the whole occasion promises to be great fun. \nOur principal guest for the day will be Sheriff Chris Hayward\, who will be joining us with his wife\, Alex\, and will be talking to us about how the Corporation is supporting the City Commercial as it reopens\, and where the pinch points have been during the pandemic. \nThen\, after lunch\, we can all enjoy a gentle stroll along the towpath by the banks of that beautiful stretch of river. \nGuests are most welcome and dress is jacket and tie for gentlemen (no jeans) and the equivalent for Ladies. \nThe Club opens for us at 12.30pm and we dine at 1pm.

SUMMARY:OMP Club Night - "Best of British" Cheese & Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Following the latest\, highly successful tasting in March\, on that occasion a Spanish-themed one\, our gourmet wing opted for an British theme for the next such event. As usual\, this will involve a robustly packed\, chilled parcel of six good cheeses\, complimented by two\, cheese-friendly wines\, all delivered to your door\, a day or two before the event. \nThen on the evening\, Harry\, the boss of our cheesemonger\, Love Cheese\, will guide us through all six cheeses and the various tasting options\, with and without the wines\, so we all end up happily full and much better informed about this important aspect of our culture. \nThe cost of attendance is £60 per person and you can book in on here or email the Clerk. He will then send out the Zoom login details to those attending\, and the cold-pack of British cheeses and wines will land on your doormat\, complete with background notes and tasting instructions.

SUMMARY:Australian Spring Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Trinity House is not just an interesting and attractive venue on the eastern edge of the City\, overlooking the historic Tower of London\, but also a beautiful building containing many treasures. Though not exactly a Livery Hall (though in some ways the Brothers of Trinity House function like a Livery)\, the venue is not only a fascinating place to hold any social event\, but also a working office\, because TH is responsible for the management of all lighthouses and lightships around the shores of both the UK and the whole of Ireland. \nOne other fact is\, however\, also relevant here\, and that is that it was at Trinity House that our new Company held its first ever Dinner in October 1977\, and as a naval chap\, and with a Father who was Dock Master of the Pool of London\, our Master has always wished to return there. In a year such as this\, where our Company is once again emerging from darkness into the light\, this seems most appropriate. \nThis Dinner replaces our Spring Dinner\, which was a casualty of Covid\, and as it will be Spring in Australia on the 6th\, and given that his intended Spring Dinner speaker was from “down under”\, the Master insists we can still use that descriptor! \nOur principal speaker for the evening will be Mark Dowie\, the CEO of the RNLI\, who will be speaking to us about their work on the Tideway and their wider plans in the immediate future. \nSo come and enjoy the company of your fellow Members and guests\, and take the rare opportunity to see inside this amazing building\, with its beautiful and fascinating artefacts.

SUMMARY:Installation Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Our Master-elect\, Sir Peter Estlin\, is also a Member of the Ironmongers’ Company and so it is entirely natural that he should choose their lovely Hall for his Installation Dinner next month. \nIronmongers’ is reached via a short causeway off Shaftesbury Place\, on Aldersgate Street\, EC2Y 8AA\, which is in the south-west corner of the Barbican complex\, hard by the Museum of London. \nThe Hall is generously sized and well-known for its beautiful panelling\, stained glass windows and excellent catering. So all-in-all\, it represents an excellent and welcoming choice\, as well as an event which will greatly impress any Members’ guests. \nOur Principal Speaker will be Dame Jayne-Anne Gadhia\, FCA\, previous CEO of Virgin Media and Chair of Women in Finance\, and now Chair of Snoop. Jayne-Anne will share some thoughts on the Master-Elect’s theme for his year: “Fit for the Future”. \nSo come and join your fellow Members and guests in saying farewell to our outgoing Master Gordon\, who has shown great leadership during his year\, and in welcoming our new Master Estlin. Peter will also be telling us more about the Hall and its history\, as well as sharing his exciting plans for 2021/22 with us. Places cost £109 and you can book on the website\, or if you can’t do that\, then email or ring me.

SUMMARY:OMP Club Night - Virtual Port and Cheese tasting
DESCRIPTION:Our friends at the famous York cheesemonger\, Love Cheese\, have laid on a number of great virtual tastings for us in the past and this is their latest idea. The evening will see Harry take us through a selection of ports and complimentary cheeses\, so that we all learn about some of the options in this area\, enjoy each other’s company and have an excellent meal. \nGuests are most welcome and parcels of port and cheese are couriered to you a couple of days before the event. \nThe Zoom details will also be circulated to those who have booked in\, shortly before the event.

SUMMARY:Carol Service and Supper
DESCRIPTION:Our Master is delighted to be holding our annual Carol Service and supper at St Margaret (on Lothbury\, EC2R 7HH\, just behind the Bank of England)\, which is not only a beautiful and historic\, 12th century City church\, but also that of our Institute (plus five Liveries and two Wards!). The Rector there is our good friend\, The Reverend Prebendary Jeremy Crossley. \nThe church is Grade 1 listed and has exceptionally fine 17th Century woodwork\, thought to be by Grinling Gibbons. St Margaret is a fine setting for this important occasion in our Livery year\, which for many of us marks the start of the Christmas season. \nAfter the service the Master has arranged for a delicious buffet supper to be served in the church hall. There will be a feast of Christmas food and drink\, with mince pies and other festive goodies much in evidence\, along with plenty of nice wines and other temptations! \nConsorts and guests are obviously extremely welcome. Dress is smart business wear and (plus warm overcoats for all!). Tickets are £49 each and will be invoiced after booking. Please book by Monday\, 6th December. \nThe Church’s website is here.  Direction and a map are here.

SUMMARY:Curry Night at The Oriental Club
DESCRIPTION:Our splendid Social Sub-Committee have arranged a real treat for us at the Oriental Club. Founded in 1824 by British officers and officials posted overseas\, the Club is a well-known private members’ club located in Stratford House\, an impressive Grade 1-listed mansion house just off Oxford Street. The Club has been home to many famous members\, perhaps most notably its first President – the Duke of Wellington. It is still a thriving Club\, housing a library and art collection\, as well as a well-stocked bar and restaurant\, and it now counts almost 3\,000 members. \nThanks to our contacts at the Oriental Club\, they have kindly provided their Library and anteroom for a private dinner and drinks reception\, limited to 40 of our members and guests. \nOver the years\, the Oriental Club has built an enviable reputation for its extensive curry menu. We have therefore designed a special curry menu for the evening\, providing a choice of meat and vegetarian dishes. \nThe price for our three-course special menu\, accompanied by three drinks\, has been capped at £65. This is sure to be a popular event\, so tickets have been limited to four per member.

SUMMARY:Winter Dinner
DESCRIPTION:This is the second major Dinner of Master Estlin’s year and he is taking us to the lovely Vintners’ Hall\, with its splendid interior and fine cuisine. \nOur speaker for the evening will be Sir Jeremy Fleming\, a member of our profession\, who is currently moonlighting as the Head of GCHQ\, the government’s signals intelligence and listening service\, based at Cheltenham. \nThis should be a fascinating evening\, and of great interest to guests. \nDress is black tie or Livery uniform.

SUMMARY:Past Masters' and Past Consorts' Meetings and Lunch
DESCRIPTION:This is the occasion at which the Master provides a report to their predecessors\, who give private guidance on issues of the day. The Masters’ Consort does much the same with those who have gone before\, and then everyone meets up for a Lunch. \nThose currently in the chair find the process and the discrete feedback and advice they receive to be very valuable\, and those who attend greatly enjoy the day and contributing to the ongoing development of their Livery Company. \nThis year\, the venue is the lovely Innholders’ Hall\, down near the river at the foot of Dowgate Hill. \nDress is smart business attire and the ticket price is calculated in arrears and billed accordingly.

SUMMARY:St Kilda - Islands at the Edge of the World
DESCRIPTION:Vicky has travelled extensively\, visiting 4 continents outside Europe. But one of her most memorable trips was a visit to St Kilda\, off the west coast of Scotland\, in 2019. \n St Kilda is an archipelago\, some 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides. It is the UK’s only dual UNESCO World Heritage Site – something that only 39 sites in the world can claim. The distinction has been awarded because of St Kilda’s natural and cultural heritage. \nVicky will share with us the highs and lows of her own trip\, including the challenges of actually getting there. She will also tell us about the history\, prehistory\, nature and geology of the islands. \nThis event is free to attend – see flyer/email for zoom joining details.

SUMMARY:United Guilds Service
DESCRIPTION:SORRY: This event sold out in just four days! \nAt a meeting of the City’s Livery Companies in 1943\, it was decided to hold a Service in St Paul’s Cathedral\, to lift the spirits of the City after the Blitz\, which had only recently ended\, having wrought such devastation on the capital in particular. This has now become an annual event\, held in the presence of the Bishop of London\, the Lord Mayor\, Sheriffs and Aldermen\, and is one of the few occasions where the Liveries and Guilds all worship together. \nAdmission is by ticket only. We always take a party to the service\, usually using our full allocation of places. The service starts at 11.30am (though we have to be seated before then) and after it ends at about 12.30pm\, we and lots of other Liveries and Guilds walk the short distance to the lovely Plaisterers’ Hall for a drinks reception followed by what is always a pretty lively\, three-course Lunch. \nWe are usually allocated 23 places\, but I haven’t been told this year’s number. Members can bring one guest\, and bookings will be honoured on a first-come-first-served basis. \nThe UGS is naturally free (The Company makes a donation centrally\, and there is the usual collection during the service.)\, and places at the lunch afterwards cost £89 each\, inc Vat. \nSORRY: This event sold out in just four days!

SUMMARY:Virtual Tour of Istanbul
DESCRIPTION:Istanbul\, a fascinating city built on two Continents\, divided by the Bospheros Strait. This is one of the greatest cities in the world where you can see a modern western city combined with a traditional eastern city\, it’s a melting pot of many civilizations and different people. \nFrom the foundation of Byzantium in the 7th century BC until today\, Istanbul held always an important role in the history of humanity in this part of the world. \nThe tour will encompass the Old City with the Byzantine Hippodrome\, the Blue Mosque\, Hagia Sophia\, the Spice Market and a glance on the Topkapı Palace. \nOur speaker who will be speaking directly from Istanbul will give us a live streaming presentation with a beautiful video of the city. \nJoin us on Wednesday 13th April at 6.20pm for the first in our series of live tours. \nCost –  £15 per connection (any number of viewers).  No prebooking is required – simply turn up on the night and Jonathan will collect via Gocardless.

SUMMARY:Common Hall
DESCRIPTION:We are obliged to hold an AGM and this is it. Members often say that it is both pleasingly short and very interesting\, and it is our opportunity to make our views plain\, and set the course of the Company for the immediate future. \nThe Master\, Clerk\, Treasurer\, Almoner and Committee Chairmen all report and submit themselves to questions. \nThe formal Calling Letter\, Agenda and Proxy Form were emailed to all Members on the evening of 21st February. Contact the Clerk if you want duplicates of any of those documents.

SUMMARY:Spring Dinner for Members and Potential Members
DESCRIPTION:Glaziers’ Hall is unique – not because it actually stands outside the City boundaries\, as Gunmakers\, Distillers and Architects do so too – but because it is the only one shared by three Companies. Quite how the Glaziers\, Launderers and Scientific Instrument Makers got together\, much less co-operated on something as potentially contentious as the purchase and maintenance of a Hall\, remains a subject of debate. However\, it really is an amazing building\, with some spectacular rooms looking north across the river towards the Square Mile\, and the stunning engineering of London Bridge on its right flank. \n\nThe Master is holding our Common Hall at Glaziers’ Hall from 6pm to 6.45pm\, and then we are moving on to a drinks reception (very necessary after the stress of our AGM!) in the stunning River Room\, before enjoying a buffet supper\, complete with a performance by the well-known London band: Lady and the Dukes. \n\nThis will be a fun event and by tradition is confined to Members and guests who are themselves prospective Members. \n\n\nPlaces cost just £54\, so come and enjoy an evening of good food and drink\, plus some fine music\, with your fellow Members and other CAs whom you think might be interested in joining our ranks.

SUMMARY:City Walk and Drink
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a fascinating walk and a little competition! \nStart: Business Centre  Chartered Accountants Hall at 5.30pm on Tuesday 3rd May \nBring a small team (3-5) or we will put you in teams. There will be a prize for the winning team! \nThe walk is approximately two miles and is suitable for people in wheelchairs. It will finish with drinks and canapes in the St Paul’s area. \nOn this walk you will discover how this square mile maintained a global empire through its control of trading\, skills and culture. See how formal trading was initially centred on 17th century coffee houses in alleys between the River Thames and the Royal Exchange.  Edward Lloyds’ Coffee House was the best attended and grew into a vital business in the City. Learn how the 110 livery companies controlled the skills of the traders through their guilds.  Find evidence of the Anglican church spreading its word through that very same trading empire and having its own impact. You will witness how the Square Mile first supported slavery and then mercifully turned its influence to abolish this abhorrent trade. To assist this narrative the walk will take you past The Bank of England\, the site of former coffee houses\, the offices of various City institutions\, The Mansion House\, Guildhall\, The London Stock Exchange and St Paul’s Cathedral.

SUMMARY:History of Tax - Paying for the Renaissance (online event)
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how the Renaissance was paid for? \nFlorence was one of Italy’s richest city-states but also one whose rulers were acutely conscious of both the shortfalls of the tax base on which it rested and the problems the tax system was causing (such as depopulation). The talk will cover what was taxed and how as well as other features of Florentine finance that tackled tax evasion. \nThe speaker Andrew Loader is a former history scholar of Christ’s College\, Cambridge and Past Consort of the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers. \nThis event will be on zoom\, is free to attend and no prior booking is necessary.

SUMMARY:Shrieval Election and Lunch at Guildhall
DESCRIPTION:Twice a year\, the City of London Corporation’s Common Hall is transformed from a standard local authority meeting on civic issues\, into a day of great ceremony. Each autumn Liverymen elect the next year’s Lord Mayor and every summer\, it’s the turn of the two Sheriffs. The Shrieval election ceremony starts at noon (There is no admission after 11.45am.) and ends around 12.30-12.45pm. Dress is lounge suit for men and smart day wear for ladies. \nAfter Common Hall\, most Liveries go home\, but our Master always hosts a private Reception and Lunch. We go up to Guildhall’s roof terrace on the fourth floor for the Reception and then into the Aldermen’s Dining Room for lunch. The day is very much one for partners and guests too. \nThis year\, as an extra\, it has been possible to secure some places at the annual Armed Forces Flag Raising in Guildhall Yard. For those who would like to stay on to see it\, this takes place at 3.15pm\, lasts about 30 minutes\, and is rather a nice sign of respect for our military from the City. \nCommon Hall and the Flag Raising are free\, and this year the Lunch costs £75. The Dining Room only holds 28 guests\, so places will have to be allocated on as first-come-first-served basis.
