SUMMARY:True and Fair Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Our True and Fair Lecture is always a high-point of our Company’s year. This time our speaker is Michael Moore. As private capital has continued to increase its contribution to the UK economy in recent years\, Michael and his colleagues in the industry have been focused on supporting the COVID-19 recovery\, delivering investment nationwide\, making it one of the best places in the world to invest and do business and supporting the drive to ‘Net Zero’. \nFor 30 years Michael has operated at senior levels in both politics and business. He was an MP for 18 years and served in the Cabinet during the Coalition\, as Secretary of State for Scotland. After the 2015 general election\, Michael became a Senior Adviser at PwC.  Prior to entering politics\, he qualified as a chartered accountant with the firm. \nAfter he has delivered his remarks\, Michael has kindly agreed to take questions\, so feel free to come along and be as robust as you like! \nAs you know\, we always make an evening of it\, with teas and coffees from 5.30pm\, then the lecture at 6pm\, and then finally a drinks reception with canapes until 8pm.\nThe Master very much hopes you can come and it would be nice to welcome any guests you may bring too. \nTickets cost just £24 \n\nAs an experiment\, rather than booking this through our online ticketing system\,\nplease book in at https://accountantslivery.wufoo.com/forms/z1nshwsc02l12p5/\n(Sadly however\, you will still however be invoiced and invited to pay in the usual way!) \nIf there are any problems or questions then please contact Clare Ferrar or clareferrar@accountantslivery.org \n\nNB: All Members have also been sent these same details and the Wufoo booking link\, via a personal letter from the Master\, which was emailed out on the morning of Friday\, 3rd February.

DESCRIPTION:Following the continued support of the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity\, WCCAEW members and guests are invited to attend a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass on Sunday 9 July at 11.15am\, followed by drinks in the Chapter House.\nThe St Paul’s Cathedral Choir and the City of London Sinfonia will perform Haydn’s Missa in angustiis at this Sung Eucharist.  This work which translates as ‘Mass for troubled times\,’ is one of the six masses written near the end of Joseph Haydn’s life.  Also known as the ‘Nelson Mass’ it was first performed in 1798. \nBased on a German tradition\, where every movement of a mass is performed with an orchestra\, this Orchestral Mass has become a well-established and popular highlight at St Paul’s Cathedral – proving a significant draw for worshippers and visitors alike. \n\nThe Covid pandemic had a hugely negative impact on St Paul’s Cathedral’s finances. Historically the Cathedral has been heavily reliant on visitor (especially tourist) income to provide 80% of the running costs. They have had to make significant financial savings since 2020 to sustain their operations\, including reducing their workforce by 25%\, and cutting back on some of their operations including reducing the activity of their famous Choir. \nSt Paul’s Cathedral’s traditional Orchestral Mass series of four performances is entirely subject to the Cathedral receiving funding. There were no such Masses in 2020 or 2021 and just one in 2022 which was only made possible thanks to the Chartered Accountants Livery Charity grant and our Music Patrons support. \n\nWhat can I expect?\nSung Eucharists is the high point of our weekly worship\, engaging the senses with sound\, colour and movement. This service includes choral and orchestral music\, hymn singing and a sermon\, \nDuring the service\, the congregation will be invited to share in the bread and wine. If you receive communion in your own church\, you are welcome to receive communion here. If you do not normally receive communion\, you are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. \nYou do not have to be a practicing member of the Church of England to attend the Eucharist. If you are unfamiliar with the service\, you can pick up an easy-to-follow order of service at the beginning\, which will guide you through each part. Visit our guidance on attending services at St Paul’s for more information on what to expect. \n\nReserve your place below\nThere are limited places available for the drinks reception in the Chapter House so these will be allocated on a first come\, first served basis. However\, there are unlimited places for the service. \n

SUMMARY:Installation Dinner 2023
DESCRIPTION:Our annual Livery Company year always starts during the month of October and this autumn\, after a most successful year\, during which we have been led with considerable style and panache by Master Richard Green\, we will enter the mastership of current Master-Elect\, Kevin Parry. \nFor the first time in a decade\, we have just secured Goldsmiths’ Hall for the next Installation Dinner. It has arguably the City’s finest hall and reception rooms. For dinner\, that hall will be lit entirely by candlelight and we anticipate an exquisite collection of gold\, gilt and jewellery will be on display in there and downstairs. \nOur speaker for the evening was due to be Lord Gerry Grimstone\, the recent government minister and former Chairman of Barclays\, amongst other roles.\nSadly\, Gerry has been taken ill and so instead\, guests will hear from Lord Theodore Agnew.\nTheodore had a very distinguished business and governmental career\, ending up as both a Cabinet Office and a Treasury Minister. His penchant for speaking his mind and actually getting things done\, marked him out for business success at an early stage\, but perhaps meant he was less likely to last for too long in the upper echelons of politics!\nHappily for the country\, Theodore continues as a doughty campaigner in the House of Lords and much of what he says represents what existing Ministers think\, but seldom feel quite able to say.\nIn business\, he has built and sold numerous companies\, including a slightly unusual one in Australia\, and is a past trustee of Policy Exchange\, the Westminster think tank. At present\, he has a financial interest in the artificial intelligence company\, Faculty\,\nLastly\, Theodore is the founder and chairman of a multi-academy trust\, which runs fourteen schools in East Anglia. \nThe Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths is also amongst our new Master’s guests and will be speaking to us all after the Installation Ceremony on the history of his Company and their fine Hall. \n\nTickets: £149\nTime: 6.30pm – Drinks\, 7pm – Call for Dinner\, 10.30pm – Carriages\nDress: Black Tie or Livery Uniform with Badges and Decorations \nPlease book below where possible\nIf unable to book online\, please contact Clare Ferrar on clareferrar@accountantslivery.org\nor 07828 554967

SUMMARY:Carol Service 2023
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Carol Service will be held in the beautiful chapel within Mercers’ Hall on Monday 11 December. \nWith music from the Bread Street Chamber Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral School\, this will be a lovely event for the festive season. \nDrinks and Canapes will be available following the service in the Ambulatory where there is currently an exhibition entitled Whittington’s Legacy on display. \nIf you wish to have a little more time in the exhibition\, the Mercers’ have kindly agreed to open the Hall from 5pm to allow attendees to view the exhibition before the service begins at 6pm \n\nPlease see below more information about the exhibition: \n2023 marks 600 years since the death of Mercer Richard Whittington\, and the start of his remarkable philanthropic legacy. Whittington’s Legacy\, an exhibition celebrating Whittington as merchant\, Mercer and philanthropist \,will be on display until 15 December 2023. The exhibition commemorates both the anniversary of his death and the establishment of his charity. \nRichard Whittington (c 1350-1423) was the youngest son of a minor landowner in Gloucestershire and came to London as an apprentice. He made his fortune in the Mercers’ trade and through financing the Crown. Whittington was active in civic life\, serving as Lord Mayor four times\, and Master of the Mercers’ Company three times. He was known for being charitable in his lifetime\, as well as leaving his entire estate to charity. Whittington directed his trustees to entrust his legacy to the care of the Mercers’ Company and his substantial bequest established the Company as a manager of charities. \nWorks from the Company’s own archive and collection will be displayed alongside loans from private collections and institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum\, the London Metropolitan Archives and the Leathersellers’ Company. A key object on display will be the surviving wardrobe accounts from the reign of Richard II\, on loan from the National Archives\, in which Whittington’s name appears on multiple occasions\, selling fine fabrics to the king. \nThe exhibition also explores Whittington’s influence on the philanthropy of subsequent Mercer benefactors\, concentrating on the three centuries following Whittington’s death\, up to 1750. During this period the Company was entrusted with many of the benefactions that form the core of its charitable work today. The displays will consider philanthropy in areas such as the church\, education\, almshouses\, and helping the poor and prisoners\, all of which have their roots in Whittington’s charitable activities and legacy. The exhibition will feature the Company’s recent acquisition of Corona Charitatis\, a sermon preached on the death of Mercer Richard Fishborne and important loans include a magnificent portrait of John Bancks\, on loan from Chequers Trust\, and a full length portrait of Sir Baptist Hicks from the collection of the Middlesex Guildhall Art Trust\, usually on display at the Supreme Court. \nWhittington’s Legacy will highlight information about the Charity of Sir Richard Whittington today\, which since 2018 has awarded 303 grants to 245 organisations totalling £20.7 million. This is a truly remarkable legacy for a man best known today as a pantomime character. \nWhittington’s Legacy will be on display in the Ambulatory from 30 January 2023 to 15 December 2023. \n\nTickets:\n \nCarol Service only: £20 \nCarol Service including Drinks and Canapes: £59 \nThe exhibition has no charge \nPlease book below where possible \nIf you are unable to book below\, then please contact Clare Ferrar on clareferrar@accountantslivery.org or 07828 554967
