OMP Club Night – Spanish Cheese and Wine Tasting

On Zoom

Those cheese aficianados in our ranks will remember with fondness the discovery that September's Spanish Cheese & Wine tasting actually turned out to be French! Still, two bottles of excellent French wine per person ensured an uproarious evening, which was further enhanced by the six delicious cheeses a-la-Macron. As a follow-up, this time the Company WILL enjoy its hoped-for Spanish-themed evening, supplied as usual by our very nice cheesemonger up in York, Love Cheese. The irrepressible Mollie will once again guide us through the Spanish Red and the White, plus the six Spanish cheeses, and as Spain is perhaps not the first country we all think of when considering cheese (as everyone frequently does!) it is sure to be an interesting, as well as a nourishing evening. The cost of attendance is £50 per person and you can book in on here or email the Clerk. He will then send out the Zoom login details to those attending, and the cold-pack of Spanish cheese and wine will then be delivered a day or two before the event.

“Glorious First of June” Lunch

Leander Club Nr henley Bridge, Henley On Thames, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

Our Master is a naval man and thus the great British sea victory on this day in 1794 against the nascent fleet of the new French revolutionary republic is imprinted firmly on his mind. He is taking this key date as an ideal excuse to lead us to a convivial lunch at the world-famous Leander Rowing Club, on the banks of the Thames, hard by Henley Bridge. The Club has a splendid, light-filled dining room overlooking the river, with its own private car park opposite the front gate, and the whole occasion promises to be great fun. Our principal guest for the day will be Sheriff Chris Hayward, who will be joining us with his wife, Alex, and will be talking to us about how the Corporation is supporting the City Commercial as it reopens, and where the pinch points have been during the pandemic. Then, after lunch, we can all enjoy a gentle stroll along the towpath by the banks of that beautiful stretch of river. Guests are most welcome and dress is jacket and tie for gentlemen (no jeans) and the equivalent for Ladies. The Club opens for us at 12.30pm and we dine at 1pm.

OMP Club Night – “Best of British” Cheese & Wine Tasting

On Zoom

Following the latest, highly successful tasting in March, on that occasion a Spanish-themed one, our gourmet wing opted for an British theme for the next such event. As usual, this will involve a robustly packed, chilled parcel of six good cheeses, complimented by two, cheese-friendly wines, all delivered to your door, a day or two before the event. Then on the evening, Harry, the boss of our cheesemonger, Love Cheese, will guide us through all six cheeses and the various tasting options, with and without the wines, so we all end up happily full and much better informed about this important aspect of our culture. The cost of attendance is £60 per person and you can book in on here or email the Clerk. He will then send out the Zoom login details to those attending, and the cold-pack of British cheeses and wines will land on your doormat, complete with background notes and tasting instructions.

Australian Spring Dinner

Trinity House Trinity Square, Tower, London

Trinity House is not just an interesting and attractive venue on the eastern edge of the City, overlooking the historic Tower of London, but also a beautiful building containing many treasures. Though not exactly a Livery Hall (though in some ways the Brothers of Trinity House function like a Livery), the venue is not only a fascinating place to hold any social event, but also a working office, because TH is responsible for the management of all lighthouses and lightships around the shores of both the UK and the whole of Ireland. One other fact is, however, also relevant here, and that is that it was at Trinity House that our new Company held its first ever Dinner in October 1977, and as a naval chap, and with a Father who was Dock Master of the Pool of London, our Master has always wished to return there. In a year such as this, where our Company is once again emerging from darkness into the light, this seems most appropriate. This Dinner replaces our Spring Dinner, which was a casualty of Covid, and as it will be Spring in Australia on the 6th, and given that his intended Spring Dinner speaker was from "down under", the Master insists we can still use that descriptor! Our principal speaker for the evening will be Mark Dowie, the CEO of the RNLI, who will be speaking to us about their work on the Tideway and their wider plans in the immediate future. So come and enjoy the company of your fellow Members and guests, and take the rare opportunity to see inside this amazing building, with its beautiful and fascinating artefacts.

So all-in-all, it represents an excellent and welcoming choice, as well as an event which will greatly impress any Members’ guests. OMP Club Night – Virtual Port and Cheese tasting

On Zoom

Our friends at the famous York cheesemonger, Love Cheese, have laid on a number of great virtual tastings for us in the past and this is their latest idea. The evening will see Harry take us through a selection of ports and complimentary cheeses, so that we all learn about some of the options in this area, enjoy each other's company and have an excellent meal. The Zoom details will also be circulated to those who have booked in, shortly before the event.

Carol Service and Supper

St Margaret, Lothbury Lothbury, London, United Kingdom

Our Master is delighted to be holding our annual Carol Service and supper at St Margaret (on Lothbury, EC2R 7HH, just behind the Bank of England), which is not only a beautiful and historic, 12th century City church, but also that of our Institute (plus five Liveries and two Wards!). The Rector there is our good friend, The Reverend Prebendary Jeremy Crossley. The church is Grade 1 listed and has exceptionally fine 17th Century woodwork, thought to be by Grinling Gibbons. St Margaret is a fine setting for this important occasion in our Livery year, which for many of us marks the start of the Christmas season. After the service the Master has arranged for a delicious buffet supper to be served in the church hall. There will be a feast of Christmas food and drink, with mince pies and other festive goodies much in evidence, along with plenty of nice wines and other temptations! Consorts and guests are obviously extremely welcome. Dress is smart business wear and (plus warm overcoats for all!). Tickets are £49 each and will be invoiced after booking. Please book by Monday, 6th December. The Church’s website is here.  Direction and a map are here.

Curry Night at The Oriental Club

Oriental Club Stafford House, 11 Stafford Place, London, United Kingdom

Our splendid Social Sub-Committee have arranged a real treat for us at the Oriental Club. Founded in 1824 by British officers and officials posted overseas, the Club is a well-known private members' club located in Stratford House, an impressive Grade 1-listed mansion house just off Oxford Street. The Club has been home to many famous members, perhaps most notably its first President - the Duke of Wellington. It is still a thriving Club, housing a library and art collection, as well as a well-stocked bar and restaurant, and it now counts almost 3,000 members. Thanks to our contacts at the Oriental Club, they have kindly provided their Library and anteroom for a private dinner and drinks reception, limited to 40 of our members and guests. Over the years, the Oriental Club has built an enviable reputation for its extensive curry menu. We have therefore designed a special curry menu for the evening, providing a choice of meat and vegetarian dishes. The price for our three-course special menu, accompanied by three drinks, has been capped at £65. This is sure to be a popular event, so tickets have been limited to four per member.
